I'd reverse it too. I can't think of a single memorable Tyler theme but every so often, when I'm in the mood for mindless bombast, I'll put on one of his action cues.

Ah, well, I guess I've always been more of a theme-man than into mindless bombast. I don't get why people wouldn't like the catchy guitar tune from Bubba Ho-tep or the Battle adagio from Rambo, which just gets to me every time. Sure, the Rambo theme and orchestration is not very original, but that doesn't concern me. If it has a nice tune, with the right orchestration and emotion, I get all gooey.

I'd say I'm a theme-man too (although I do rather enjoy mindless bombast quite often). But Tyler doesn't exactly write the best themes. I'm sure he's got a handful of catchy themes in his back catalogue, but I can't say his thematic skills strike me as anything particularly special. I do like Tyler, and I think he's got a bit more to him than just mindless action. But if I'm in a mindless action mood, Tyler is a composer who springs to mind.

I have a recommendation for you: Discovery from The Lazarus Project. Probably my favorite Brian Tyler's cue. Pure enjoyment!

Great thanks! I'm a little embarrassed to say this, since you like it so much, but I've listened to it many times and I don't really enjoy it much yet... but perhaps with more listens I will. I appreciate the recommendation though, and hope that people will post some more.

It could be that you are right after all. Now that I count the number of Tyler themes that I love, there aren't really that many, and since I haven't really fallen for the themes recommended in this thread so far, perhaps I overestimated his gift for making themes that appeal to me. I just figured that the scores I have would be representative of his style and that there would be many great cues out there, but perhaps the few I have are the only ones that truly will do it for me. There's just this unique Tyler sound, featuring in Rambo, Partition and to a lesser degree in Battle of LA that I adore. Hopefully I'll come across more of these some day.

  1. I have many times stated my disappointment with Tyler as a thematic writer, but maybe mostly due to the soundscape he tries to achieve (basically what Tyler is trying to do with his huge, I never denied it, orchestral skills is to give a much more orchestrally and rhythmically complex twist on the fun that Zimmer did in the mid-90s, which is not bad a thing, coming from the place that he is scoring projects that are the equivalent of that kind of action cinema, even if PG-13 in their large majority). But his knack for not-so-strong, but still heavily utilized (structurally Brian Tyler is - also not a bad thing, as I once said - channeling Jerry Goldsmith and his type of thematic utilization) themes work much better in more experimental and ambient scores like Far Cry 3. That score's theme is not only somehow better in a melodic sense than what he usually does, when he's not trying to channel a type of anthemic theme, but also works much better with the created soundscape, so it works plain beautifully.

In other words, if he sticks to writing more complex, but still at heart what I would call a mix between Jerry Goldsmith and RCP sensibilities, then he has to work on his memorability. If Far Cry 3 and partially (due to a bigger restraint in orchestrations thanks to which the score sounds better rounded than usual) Expendables 2 (which to me is a very good sign of things to come, even if not always convincing for me), then he is going to work really well. There has been a real growth in his career from even what he wrote a year ago. He is partially (at least partially!) reinventing his own voice, which gives me a lot of hope.

Pawel, here is a list of my favorite tracks from Terra Nova. It focuses mainly on action music since that is generally the most interesting thing from Tyler, as well as the more melodic drama tracks and bits of interesting dissonance. I can't guarantee that its the same tracks you would pick of course, but if you still haven't listened to this fine score because you're afraid of the insane length, then you'll be happy to know that this fits on one CD...

    1-1) Terra Nova
    1-2) Cycles of Time
1-3) One Last Hope for Humanity
    1-4) Banishment
    1-5) This Valley
1-7) You Let Her Leave With Him
    1-9) The Portal
1-10) Someone Wants To Talk With You
    1-12) Patrols
    1-13) The Plan
    1-14) Flying Over Terra Nova
1-15) I'm Heading Outside The Gates
1-18) The Investigation of Outpost 9
    1-20) Last Known Location
    2-1) Magical Journey
    2-2) Entering The Vortex
    2-4) Base Camp
    2-6) Remember That Handle
    2-9) Take The Shot
2-15) I Want To Declare My Intentions
    2-16) There She Goes
    2-18) Preparing For Battle
    2-22) Prehistory
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

"Also, in other news, Brian Tyler has confirmed that he did NOT score Fast and Furious 6. He was unable to due to Spanish Tax Incentive requiring a Spanish composer AND because he was also scoring Iron Man 3 at the same time."

Actually, he's been retweeting tweets from Fast Six director Justin Lin from the cutting room, and promotional tweets about a featurette and a first look of Fast Six recently, so my guess seems to be right!

Was this the same reason why Wrath of the Titans got a score by Javier Navarrete. Cause I didn't hear anything good from that whole mess.
