I'm not smart enough to know what is going on other than my friend reported to work this evening at a supermarket closeby and he was terminated as the company fears the worst. I'm surprised because it was a minimum wage ($8.00 per hour) job.

One of the things that is happening in San Diego and perhaps other areas of the United States is the eliminating of smaller business. Walmart, Target, Costco are offering lower prices than the local markets forcing cost cutting in terms of their pricing. To save money the companies are hiring basic minimum wage help with no benefits such as health care, paid vacation etc. Perhaps my friend just got caught up in this and it has nothing to do with the bigger economic picture.
