Film Music: A Neglected Art Review Thread

Right now I'm working on revising my Devil and Daniel Webster review in anticipation of the new Tribute Film Classic release next year, something I'm making known in the article.
I've begun the review of the fine Exodus release from Tadlow.
I've listened to the new Zatoichi recording from La-La Land with some interest because of Ifukube.

Yes, Tom has been choosing to post his new review links elsewhere in the forum. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

I keep thinking it's a review of the Roy M. Prendergast book every time I see this thread ressurected (which, to be fair, isn't that often).I am extremely serious. -

I think this is a logical place to post the reviews. Alan has a thread.

Nice one!
Actually bought the score now, Tom. It sounded lovely, and your review is spot on.'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn -

I'm working on a review for "Beneath The Twelve Mile Release" from Bernard Herrmann. I've got the new Kritzerland release.

In my opinion this is a must have in your collection and a fine example of how underscore can be written.

A new release from Silva called WOLF HALL from Debby Wiseman that I'm just starting to listen to. It is a smaller chamber ensemble and the overall flavor of the music is classical.

Just received my copy of the complete Egyptian. The opening main title is one of Herrmann's best cues

Tom, you make mention of the quality of the sound on this Kritzerland release. You say that there's minimal difference in the sound quality of this and the earlier FSM release. No need to "upgrade" from the FSM to the Kritzerland then? The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

No need to upgrade. My guess is that there were early on problems with the cinemascope process which you probably know was three tracks. The film itself ended up in public domain which could also have contributed to the demise of the film. In spite of the shortcomings I still like the score as well as the mastery of Herrmann. He came up with some good ideas. While not as classically oriented as Korngold (golden age you know) his ideas were mostly sound. I can only imagine if Korngold had been born one hundred years earlier and he had the opportunity to work among Wagner, Brahms, Liszt, Raff, and so many others. I believe he would have changed the course of 19th century music.
On another topic do you have Herrmann's recording of the Lenore (#5) of Raff's?
