I wish I'd been able to snag the expanded edition. But my 35-minute pressed boot will have to do.

    NP: True Lies, Brad Fiedel
One of my oldest CDs, and thus I sometimes forget exactly how AMAZING a score this is. The action is so rollicking and fun. You'd never imagine the Terminator guy could do this. While Terminator is Fiedel's finest contribution to film, True Lies is by far his finest contribution to film music. Distinction.
''The mandate, as well as the benefit, of responsibility is the ability to tell when one can afford to be irresponsible.'' - Me
  2. Actually I would call Terminator 2 his greatest achievement to film, the sound of the music in that one is totally spot on and totally in sync with the cold metallic sound design created by the sound effects guys. The first one is just a little too harsh and amateurish sounding to my ears.

But True Lies is indeed big fun. He should do another similar blockbuster in the future.

The sound effects and sound design Fiedel used in Terminator 2 (and even Terminator) were very effective. Those metallic sounds and the growling synths were perfect for the Terminators... but the score itself is terrible. The theme is fiiting, I'll give it that, but when you listen to it outside the film you realise how crap it really is.

I think a mix of metallic sounds, growling synth and orchestral scoring for the more emotional scenes would have worked better. At least it's what I'd prefer.

Oh well yes, I just meant the Terminator franchise as a whole. Didn't mean to single out 1 from 2.

But yes, since T2 is a far greater contribution to cinema as a whole, then it follows that T2's score is also a greater contribution to cinema. While I consider T1, the film, merely groundbreaking, I would call T2 "era defining". Where was that nomination for Best Picture, I truly do not know. It baffles me.

Well, it sounds harsh I'm kinda inclined to agree. Although I feel he struck gold with True Lies, the man was never truly in his element. Better quit while you're on top. If it were me, after True Lies, I also would've realized it could only be downhill from there.

I've always like the T2 score since it so perfectly glued to the visuals and backbone of the story, you should see me rock out on the more action-oriented stuff, where normal people would just run away in disgust biggrin , and why should it have been orchestral for the emotional moments, when every other composer in the business had done it numerous times already. I think the nice touch of an acoustic guitar and some synth worked wonders in the film... and on CD. In the endless ocean of orchestral music, T2 definitely stood out at the time.

    T2 > T1

Bigger is better in this case.

Don't get me wrong, the first is splendid in every way, but number two is like you put it so gently "era defining"... I totally agree on that, I consider it one of the deepest and most satisfying blockbusters to have ever come out of Hollywood.

Time Of The Wolf - John Scott

I join with many people on this forum in regretting Scott never having gotten more high-profile film work to score. What a wonderful sense of symphony and lyricism this man displays!
The only reason I can think of is that his style may be considered a bit old-fashioned in its classical approach (this score, incidentally, being a bit of an odd man out with its electric guitar and percussion bits).

Hear, hear! I love John Scott and Time of the Wolf is also one of my favourites. I love great north Americana scores. The pantheon, as far as I'm concerned is:

    Balto, James Horner
    White Fang 2, John Debney
Call of the Wild, Lee Holdridge
Time of the Wolf, John Scott

All fantastic "Great North" Americana pieces. We could do a guess-the-score game with that theme, but we've already exposed all the major titles.

Oooooh. Thanks for making this post. I really should listen to Time of the Wolf since I love all of the other scores from that list.

United 93 is a tremendously shocking, emotional experience in all levels, audio and visual. John Powell's score is beyond anything i'd have ever expected this movie to have as a musical accompaniment and i cannot really think of anything more appropriate to escort the gripping visuals.

Indeed. To me, it doesn't sound like drone, but more like a Bourne score without the action.

I understand that some people will dislike the score, but I like it a lot, mainly because it builds itself up to a fantastic ending. The music is perfect for the visuals and the real life events they are based on.

NP: Howl's Moving Castle (Soundtrack) - Joe Hisaishi

The main theme "Merry-Go-Round Of Life" is incredibly memorable and beautiful. But, other than that, overall this is my least favorite of all Hisaishi/Ghibli scores. I still think it's a good score, but I can't get into it so much, even if I really love the main theme.

Its one of my favorite Ghibli scores, although I like the movie a lot, so maybe that has influenced me slightly.

You're sure??!? Without having heard it?? But have you seen the film? It is such a fun and funny film. It's any composer's dream. It was in essence a "freebie" for Fiedel. He could not not nail that one.

    NP: The Vagrant, Christopher Young
The most Elfmanesque non-Elfman score this side of Ed Wood. This score is SO original! I'd love to see that film just for the sheer weirdness factor.

Charming score by Hans, becoming one of my year's favourites.

I've been listening to the Sixth Sense complete all day.
I also have a version where it is pretty much the entire movie with dialogue and all. Very fun to listen to. It is a blast just hearing the music in context and being able to concentrate on it more.

Obviously this is an age thing.
Me, I thought Terminator was FAR more genre defining than T2, which, basically, was just a sequel with more explosions, the -at the time- revolutionary "liquid metal" effects and a cop-out happy ending (negating everything that made Terminator so claustrophobica and dark). And of course an obligatory good guy Terminator as Ah-nold now had contractually enforced his Hero status.

T2 and Terminator 3 are amusing diversions for a Friday evening (with T2 being the better one).
Terminator I still find an experience.
