I would say that this is in the category of a must have unless you have an aversion to golden score material.

Thanks for the review, Tom! I'm still hesitating over buying this CD or not, but I guess I will give in in the end and will buy it.

As long as you enjoy the older material. Gold had a unique style but he is in the same category as most of the golden age composers ie Waxman, Steiner, Newman, Tiomkin, etc.

Older material? This is about great music and that's it, no matter when it was written. I couldn't recommend this music enough! Fully-lyrical, melodic and theme-driven, bold and epic in their pure essence.

Nice to hear a proper orchestral version of it rather than the cheesy "easy listening" version with a pop beat that is so famous around the world.

I suspect you're referring to the Ferrant & Teicher version that became so popular.

The theme to EXODUS is one of the greatest ever written, right up there alongside it is Steiner's Theme from the composers CROSS OF IRON, check it out if you've never heard it Thor, it's there in the 'related videos' bar in the same link.

Agree with Tim, that theme is absolutely marvelous. Film Music at its best....and i'm even tempted to say "orchestral music at its best" too.

The Exodus Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra is a nice way to listen to the theme. If someone one day would want to create a tone poem of the themes it could be interesting. However, that is a lot of work.

  1. Kritzerland have announced a limited release of Gold's score Pressure Point.

I've never heard of the film but the clips sound interesting.

Tom, have you come across this one before?

How is It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (2010) - Ernest Gold ? Is this a re-recording, or a remastered release? How's the score?

    Thanks

It's no Exodus but it's a great fun score with the most wonderful and infectious Waltz.

Thanks, that's the technical info i've been looking for

"We’ve eliminated all the dialogue and gone back to the original LP presentation, transferred and completely remastered from the original album masters created in 1963. As bonus tracks, we’re thrilled to include the original film versions of the overture, main titles (both with the sound effects, which were designed to go hand in glove with Gold’s score and Saul Bass’s fantastic title design, and without), intermission, entr’acte, finale, and exit music. "

Not too sure i'd enjoy this though, i have to listen to samples smile

And me as well! I've not come across either of these scores before, but the clips sound excellent.

And it's so easy to order from Kritzerland (too easy!).

Steiner's theme from CROSS OF IRON is one of the best I've ever heard.

When I tried this clip earlier I couldn't get it to work. But the remaining clips were enough to clinch the deal.

Believe me, it's brilliant, right up there with his theme to EXODUS, IMO.

He's a character played by james Coburn in the film, nothing to do with the golden age composer wink

I'm working on a review of the 1975 film "The McCullochs" with a score by Ernest Gold. This is a limited edition release of 1000 units from MMM which is unusual for David. It is a good example of western film score music. I've included a mono clip of the main title but the CD is in stereo.
