The LOTR Symphony recording has now been officially announced for September 12th, and the score for Hugo will follow (also on Howe Records) on November 23rd.

Is Howe Records something Shore himself has started?

Yes, it is. There was supposed to be a second volume of the Collector's Edition series, but as I understand it there were a few snags.

Also, that release date for Hugo is for the film - I don't have an official date for the score as yet.

Listening to this at the moment. I am assuming that this is the recording that is going to be released later this month?

I am finding that it is sounding quite different from the original recordings. Some of it is sounding excellent but I am not sure I particularly like it. Again, I am so used to the original recordings, particularly the sound of the more prominent instrumentation as heard on these original recordings, that these new versions with a slightly different emphasis of these instruments is a bit distracting.

It's a shame because the massed orchestra and choir as well as some of the other solo pieces sound really good and nail the sound I expect to hear right on the head.

  5. Calling it "a shame" may be being a bit too harsh. The more I listen to it the more I have gotten used to it and it does represent a good alternate listening experience. For every emphasis that I hear that I don't enjoy as much as the original, there is another passage that has a slightly different sound that I quite like because it brings out an aspect of the score that I haven't heard before.

This broadcast is now just coming to the end of the Fellowship of The Ring part.

I am just really rambling about this broadcast and it is coming across as being a bit hot and cold. But when it comes down to it, if this version can still make me shed a tear when I hear the music that accompanied the death of Boromir then it is a good recording.

I too am looking forward to getting a hold of this.

  7. I'm listening to this online too and really enjoying it (Thanks for the link Jim!). it is the first time I've heard it since I heard it twice conducted by Shore in London in May and September 2004.

I appreciate what you're saying about the performance but overall I think it's pretty great. The thing I'm having most difficulty with is many of the vocal solos, but I think once I've listened to the CD a few times I'll like them just fine.

I have the complete recordings but rarely listen to him, but I love the fact that my 3 absolute favourite moments not on the original Fellowship CD are included here in the symphony. I don't believe there's any material from the latter 2 films not found on the OSTs.

Just 'Return of the King' left to go now, can't wait to get the CD in a few weeks time.
  8. Wow, They really nail the grandeur of 'The Return of the King', great stuff!
  9. the music from the last half hour of 'The Return of the King' (not just that which is in the symphony) has got to be some of the most emotional music ever written. Astounding.

Not used to such short tracks from Shore, by the way. Seems like the Wagner piece is the main attraction.

It took until the 18th clip for things to get interesting for me. Sounds like I'll be taking advantage of the individual track download option on this one.

Not very unusual for Shore in the last 2 years.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  12. Listening to the clips, I like the predominance of the low strings and the Howard Shore "sound". But it doesn't seem to be any more interesting than a lot of what he has done before. Some of the clips reminded me a bit of his score to The Yards. Now, I can't be sure from just listening to the clips, but I would always go back to listen to that score than choose this one.

  13. The clips of A Dangerous Method suggest that this score is a lot less interesting than it actually is. It still isn't very memorable but it does have some interesting moments - though I feel that the 30+ minute final cue is a bit of waste.

I'm listening to his latest soundtrack "A Dangerous Method." It is all based around the Siegfried opera theme.

The final cue is an arrangement for solo piano of Siegfried Idyll. I'm not sure how to take this one. It seems on the surface to be an awfully simplistic arrangement painfully slow. It is so quiet in parts I had to turn the volume up to hear a chord in ppp and yet from time to time he gets painfully loud. I'll say this it has dynamic range that an analog recording couldn't reproduce. The digital file sounds good.
