Yes, but you must have the knowledge of the genre and its tools to do it correctly. It's not always a success. Imagine John Williams doing dubstep.

Well, he did about 30 seconds of techno in A.I. smile

Wasn't supposed to be his son Joseph who composed that cue?

    Don't shatter my dreams! wink

Actually, I have yet to read any official source that mentions anyone else than John himself composing that cue, although the speculation has been running this and that way.

I don't see why he didn't do it himself. It isn't rocket science.

  1. Including a couple from Hobbit 2? From the extended edition of the film perhaps?

    Ha!

Ninety second samples are now up on the US iTunes store too.
  3. Looking at these two releases for the third HOBBIT film score, I have two questions for those of you that have already listened to this score 20 times (you know who you are)

    1. Am I correct in saying that there is nothing on the standard edition that isn't also on the special edition? It looks like the special edition is the same, with some extra music in a handful of cues and a couple bonus tracks on the end.

    2. Is there anything in the expanded versions of the tracks or in the bonus tracks that makes the special edition the one to buy, or is it just more of the same?

  5. I read quickly over it right now and will read it more closely later today. But I can see already, Jon, that we are in complete agreement. Your review is, as always, detailed, informative and expertly written. I very much appreciate the work you put in these reviews.

Quite a thoughtful review. When I see film or hear score, I'll have my ears open to hopefully spot some of the architecture you describe. What made it tricky for me, particularly in the second Hobbit film, is that the thematic complexity tends to not have a lot of practical bearing on how the scenes play out. It's a nice feature if you're looking for it, but it's hard to imagine it's affecting audience understanding of the forces at work in the same way that say, a John Williams score of 2-4 themes (Catch me if you can, The war horse) would do.
A butterfly thinks therefore I am
  7. Stop listening to The HOBBIT: The Battle of the Five Armies in the midst of the second CD.

Man it started to irritate me beyond belief. It just went on and on. So I needed something to lift my spirits. Put on How to Train your Dragon 2 (for the first time instead). It worked wonderfully wink

  10. Also, his label is releasing his score to the new film "Denial".

Yes, a song & score album with only 2 tracks devoted to the score. And, yes there has been a bootleg floating around for a while. But, it's going to be good to get a big chunk of the score (if not all of it) being available more generally.

(And it's finally going to be good to have a full version of the climactic track - the bootleg version is clipped so that the very start of that track is missing.)

Glad that Se7en has escaped the quagmire that was holding up the release! It's a fascinating and complex score.

Hey now -- I think a 20-minute selection certainly qualifies as a representative score release, even if it may be missing a whole lot. It's at the very least not brief enough to be dismissed as 'non-existant'.
    I am extremely serious.
  12. Yes, it is a "representative score release" for those who just want a snapshot release that doesn't represent the breadth of musical ideas Shore had for the score.

Did someone say that the Shore's score was "non-existent" on CD? Perhaps I should have said score-only rather than score just to prevent the confusion. But I had assumed that my original meaning would have been easily understood.
