Howard Shore to score ‘Twilight: Eclipse”

EXCLUSIVE. Howard Shore is on board to compose the original score for the third film in the Twilight series, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Temple Hill Entertainment today confirmed to MovieScore Magazine that the Lord of the Rings composer is going to write the music for the film, following in the footsteps of Carter Burwell (who scored the first film in 2008) and Alexandre Desplat (who wrote the music for the second, New Moon). Howard Shore is, of course, best known for the Tolkien trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson, an epic work that is currently touring the world in concert form, performed live to projection. Shore also recently rescored the Mel Gibson action thriller Edge of Darkness for Warner Bros, replacing John Corigliano. This film is opening in the US next week.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is based on the third novel in the series of four books written by Stephenie Meyer. The film is directed by David Slade (30 Days of Night and Hard Candy), with returning cast members including Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Billy Burke, Ashley Greene and Jackson Rathbone. Summit Entertainment will release the film on June 30.

Who would have thought that such an outrageously crappy movie project would bring so interesting scores from such prolific composers along! Great news.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  1. Too bad for Abel Korzeniowski, who was seriously being considered.

  3. Interesting, and I guess I can hardly begrudge the choice going to someone other than Desplat, because he's got about 10 films coming already. Still, these days I find myself dreading new dark Howard Shore scores. The heavy doom-laden low strings minor key thing that he does can really bore me sometimes. There's a lot of scores he does that have great character, but somehow I always end up expecting this sound.

Indeed, and the last 2 years have been pretty much mediocre for someone with the musical history of Shore. I really want to hope that this score will bring change along, but i am having difficulties actually imaging someone like him being in fact inspired by crappy teenage vampire porn stories.

Interesting. But I wanted Alexandre Desplat to come back... too bad.

You do have to wonder when Desplat will be put to the test that all film composers must be put to: where do you take your good musical ideas in the sequel? wink

I am really glad to see him composing for Twilight Saga. I personally believe that was right choice. Honestly speaking, i am not fan of twilight saga and i have never seen the movies. But now, i have turned myself towards this saga because its going to be one of my favorite who is going to compose for this movie. He once again returning to genre called fantasy after LOTR. I hope he will deliver the best of best.

    Have a nice day!

The movies are pathetic. The scores however, are at least very interesting, especially after NEW MOON and now, this development. It's impressive how they choose such a musical direction for a teenage girl pants wetting machine such as the Twilight saga, instead of something that would perhaps echo more to their audiences' tastes, like, don't know, Djawadi and all? We are lucky they opted for the romantic and lush side of things, at least musically.

I think they are looking for elegance. First Burwell and Desplat, both able to pull off elegant scores in their own respective ways. Now Shore, who I think has really explored "the elegance of darkness" in many films, primarily Cronenberg's of course. I think this is going to be very interesting.

On a sidenote, from what I've heard of Edge of Darkness that score seems to be his best in many years...

  5. Listening to clips to Edge of Darkness there's a definite Silence of The Lambs sort of a feel to this - which I'm really pleased about. I just love that whole atmosphere.

Someone i know had this to say today:

"Saw the film the other night. Probably the most mundane, run-of-the-mill score I've ever heard from Shore. Had zero impact."
