Someone from the Zimmer's crew played one of the musicians at Tortuga scene in Pirates Of The Caribbean 2. I forgot who he is though.

  1. D, I think it's not the only Lynch film where BAdalamenti acts, though I haven't seen much of them...

Doyle, yes indeed. It's him starting to sing Non nobis Domine in Henry V. In fact I think he is a trained actor actually, isn't he?

Danny Elfman in Forbidden Zone. As the devil. You've never seen a composer having so much fun in front of a camera.

And then his singing parts in Tim Burton's animations, of course.

To answer Omaha, I've always found Gremlins 2 to be a truly classic film, with more one-liners you can count. Memorable, colourful characters and the fact that it's a parody of itself makes it really worth it. And I always cheer at the Goldsmith moment.

  2. I'll say. Did you see what he had his hands on at once point?
The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else.
  3. Danny Elfman also plays the violin in a dream sequence in The Gift, interestingly scored by Chris Young.

If you count his Oingo Boingo appearances, Danny Elfman has had many more besides FORBIDDEN ZONE and THE GIFT.

Anyone who grew up watching Saturday morning kids TV in England in the early-to-mid 80s will remember Doyle being in a show called "Number 73". He was a recurring character in that show, playing a character called Percy Simmonds, and then playing Percy's Scottish brother Alec, alongside such luminaries such as Sandi Toksvig and Neal Buchanan!

Here's the man himself, sitting on a car with the rest of the cast:

And here he is, in his full glory as Percy!

I usually wish that composers would stick to what they do best and stay away from in front of the camera - except when they are there to do something like conduct an onscreen orchestra. I remember a lot of people wetting themselves when John Williams appeared in a Star Wars movie - I just didn't understand the excitement. And it did tend to divert me out of the story at that moment.

  6. I sort of agree with you, Alan. It was a nice tribute to Williams of course, but it also unwittingly calls attention to the artifice of the film, "drawing back the curtain" a bit. It takes you out of it. As do any number of such fanservice-y moments throughout the sequel trilogy. The last thing I want to be thinking about while watching a Star Wars film is Star Wars fandom.

I don't mind it. I can easily switch between a more detached viewing and more engrossed viewing anyway.

I suppose that, by extension, the recognition of Williams - and the association of him as a 'celebrity' - should only be an extreme reaction of the reaction you would have seeing your favourite actor in every movie you watch. But that doesn't usually happen.
