I don't know if it's because I'm listening to an online radio station with 80's electropop now or whatever, but Harold is one of my favourite 80's composers that really took hold of the whole MIDI revolution that was happening. Smooth, delicious film anthems and a firm grasp of the whole production - bringing each element to fruition. His pop music career ain't too shabby either.

Personal favourites include TANGO & CASH (I have a signed copy!), FLETCH, obviously BEVERLY HILLS COP and THIEF OF HEARTS.

Knowing the preferences of this forum, I'm not expecting a lot of cheering, but please share your thoughts!
    I am extremely serious.
  1. The themes are good at times. I like the Top Gun anthem for example. Never cared to check the underscore out.

  2. the music is like fiedel, catchy and atmospheric, cool enough for the 80's genre

I always liked Tango & Cash and I think his Kuffs is equally cool wink

The Top Gun Anthem is my favourite, too. I once saw a video of that track at Planet Hollywood which was about the history of flying. They showed film bits of the earliest airplanes up to modern combat jets while the Anthem was running. If you know that track, you know it has a kind of siren sound effect near the end. Guess what, the video ended with the Enterprise from Star Trek: The Motion Picture going into warp at the exact moment that siren sound went off. We were there to eat some burgers of course, and no one beside me noticed what was going on with that history of flying video, and I stopped eating and watched, and when that Enterprise scene came, I was nearly welling up. That thing was the most amazing video about flying I have ever seen. Using that music was brilliant, and concluding it with the Enterprise going into warp send me directly over the edge. Sadly, that video is nowhere to be found. I really wish I would have talked to the manager on that day. Moments lost in time...

I just watched The Running Man over the weekend, and I love the music that he does for that movie. At least it works well IN the movie...as a listen out of the movie it is not the greatest.
---- Well, I wouldn't argue that it wasn't a no holds barred, adrenaline fueled thrill ride. But, there is no way you can perpetrate that amount of carnage and mayhem and not incur a considerable amount of paperwork.
  3. I agree. That movie is old fashioned fun, and the score´s main theme is very addictive, but as a standalone, it has aged. A lot.

I find Fatlermeyer and his ilk to have great themes, but underscore on the boring side, quite a chore to sit through THE RUNNING MAN IMO.

    The theme is brilliant, though.
  4. I think that's a general consensus about Mr. Harold.

I like the Top Gun score a lot!
  5. The expanded Top Gun soundtrack is one of my most played film soundtrack pop albums. I adore the two Faltermeyer tracks.

He sure made some recognizable tunes in those days. He recently did a videogame which has his trademark stamp all over it, yet without sounding like 80s cheese. It's called Two Worlds and I think a soundtrack of it was released.

I find the death of the cheese personally very unfortunate. It's why careers like Bill Conti's were cut short. But what can you do? Times change, fashions evolve. The best thing to hope for now is a steady re-release flow of these wonderful gorgonzola balls like Tango & Cash, and please, always, more Bill Conti, until there's no more.

The Running Man is one of the absolute oldest CDs in my collection. I still do like to give it a spin for nostalgic effects.

I have to disagree with this, I'm afraid. There is very little of his own voice in that videogame score. It sounds more like a desperate attempt to mimic Zimmer's sound, yet it comes off as second-rate or "thin" compared to that. Certain HINTS of his sound arise here and there, though, such as the "City Mix":

You know what Thor, you're probably right. There are hints here and there and most of Two Worlds is not interesting in any way, yet some tracks near the beginning stand out, and the electric guitar-fueled ones are totally my kind of thing, it's refreshing to hear melodic metal / hard rock in a videogame score once in a while.

Yeah, I certainly agree with that. When he doesn't try to mimic Zimmer all that much, the "world music"-sounding stuff reminds me a lot Ian Ritchie's excellent music for the LONELY PLANET travel series. It's fine listening, but not terribly original NOR Faltermeyerish.

So, LaLaLand released the first two BEVERLY HILLS COP scores:

At long last! One of my most-requested titles. Brilliant release (despite the C&C presentation)!

I just wish this had come out in the mid 2000s, when I was still buying CD's regularly.

  16. Those two are no brainers for me. Ordered instantly.
