Apparently he wrote what's considered one of the most worthy game scores of 2011.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

  2. I only have one Hisaishi album (the Princess Mononoke symphonic album) and have been considering buying some more of his stuff. I have to admit, though, that whenever he for piano it always sounds to me exactly like every other time he's written music for piano. I've heard several of his scores in their respective films and haven't been wowed by them, but so many people have raved about his music that I thought maybe I'd better try it outside of the film. For example, I've seen Ponyo and Spirited Away, but wasn't terribly impressed by the music in the films. Lots of people say those scores are great, so I wonder what I missed. I also heard his score to Castle in the Sky in the film and was VERY impressed by it, but never hear anyone mention that score. I should mention that all of this films I saw were the American versions. Have I heard that the Castle in the Sky score was re-recorded with less synthesizer for the American version?

Anyway, here are some of his scores I've been considering...

    Ponyo
I Want to be a Shell Fish
    Spirited Away
    Departures
    Castle in the Sky

    Any suggestions?

    -Chris
  3. I would try I WANT TO BE SHELLFISH. Of all of them, that's the one that plays best to me, and I share a bit of your -- 'oh, every piano piece sounds the same' -- reaction to some of his previous works.

  4. Thanks! Duly noted.
  5. Try Departures. If you can listen to that score without shedding a tear, you have a stone for a heart.
  6. We'll see. I'm not sure I can remember any score actually making me shed tears...outside of the film. But thanks for the recommendation!

Agreed. Shellfish is the only one which has prompted me to frequently revisit.

His music is all brilliant really, i find it very hard to distinguish just some few titles. SAme goes for Kenji Kawai for me.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Spirited Away is a great creative and fun score, Ponyo is lovely too. But this one is absolutely magic stuff: check it out

  9. Ponyo was pretty good in the film. I especially liked the choir and that piece that sounds like "Ride of the Valkyries."

That was too close to the real thing for my taste.

Christopher - chuck us your eMail address and there will be a nice Hisaishi surprise for you!

As for the man's music...wonderful. Each and everyone of his scores is a worthwhile endeavour.
"Ashitaka and San" from Princess Mononoke is the reason why I took up playing the piano again!

    shocked

  10. Thanks for all the help, everyone! I knew you all would know everything there is to know about Hisaishi. I've looked around for some of his scores and am having a hard time finding I WANT TO BE A SHELLFISH. Can any of you point me to a place that might be selling the CD or the score as a download? I've checked everywhere I know, including yesasia, and can't find it...

    Thanks again

There ya go, Christopher (you needed to go with the Japanese title, 私は貝になりたい):

Warning: the Japanese originals usually don't come cheap!
  11. Oy, you're not kidding. Thanks for the link, though. I NEVER would have found that. Ever. Now I just have to make sure that you've linked me to the right CD. I don't want to find out that misleading a gullible film score fan into paying $35 for a japanese-dubbed Julia Child cooking class on CD is your idea of a fun practical joke! cheesy
