  1. I thought that I'd start a topic specifically devoted to Paul's music. Up until his recent score for the BBC Scotland documentary, A History of Scotland, I had not come across any of his work.

His site features a significant amount of work that's available to listen to. Head over to his site - http://www.paulleonardmorgan.com/ - and "enter the site". Click on downloads, fill in the details and that gives you access to some audio clips. Tracks from such titles as Galapagos and Love Me Still are particularly worth hearing.

Thanks Alan! The music from A History Of Scotland sounds like it's worth getting! cool smile
  2. I'm just finishing off my first full listen to the score for A History of Scotland and I'm very pleased with what I'm hearing. Very beautiful.

It's certainly not a score that hits you across the face trying to get its point across (though it does have its moments!) It's very much a score that washes over you track by track, planting musical ideas in your mind. I think that the nature of the original programme (i.e., historical documentary) the music was composed for means that there's not much development within each cues: the cues tend to have a central idea that's faded in at the beginning of the track, it builds the idea and then fades. But the ideas are worthy of your time.

At the very least it's worth investigating and - although I may be a bit biased - I think that it's worth investing in.

You guys may want to check Galapagos out too. It's a terrific piece of work.
  3. A recent concert featuring a suite of Paul Leonard-Morgan's music to A History of Scotland is on BBC iPlayer (until Sunday). Since it's iPlayer it's only available to UK residents.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 … d_Concert/

The short suite begins around 35 minutes into the concert. There's also an interview with the composer immediately after this suite.

A while back, I posted in Now Playing about an album of his, "Filmtales". I'd recommend it to anyone. He's like another version of Craig Armstrong, in that he write for orchestra and synthesize in similar fashion. Not a diss on his ability, or anything negative. If you like Craig's non film work, you'll like Paul's album.
  5. A descriuption ,as posted in April, on Facebook on how his "Dredd" score sounds:

"Take a bunch of 80's analog synths, stick them through every distortion pedal known to man, then add on some crunched up beats, and you should be halfway there ..."

    DREDD

    RELEASE DATE: DIGITAL – SEPTEMBER 3 / PHYSICAL – SEPTEMBER 10
    Watch the trailer here- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbCfqGsXu3M

2000 AD’s DREDD explodes onto the big screen this September, with BAFTA-winning British composer Paul Leonard-Morgan (Limitless, Spooks) creating the sound of Mega City One’s feared Judge. The 22-track soundtrack to the forthcoming movie DREDD (3D) is released digitally worldwide on September 3, and physically on September 10 through Metropolis Movie Music/Fontana International.

DREDD starring Karl Urban (Star Trek, The Bourne Supremecy, Lord Of The Rings), Olivia Thirlby (Juno) and Lena Headey (Game Of Thrones) was written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine). Garland also produced the film alongside Andrew Macdonald (Sunshine, Trainspotting) and Allon Reich (Never Let Me Go). DREDD was directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point). DREDD (3D) will be released in the UK on September 7.

Paul Leonard-Morgan is best known for his score for last year’s box office No 1 hit Limitless starring Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, and directed by Neil Burger (The Illusionist). This soundtrack earned him a nomination for the prestigious World Soundtrack Discovery Award. Previously he had been the composer for the BBC’s award-winning drama Spooks. Leonard-Morgan was also honoured by the US Olympic Committee when chosen to compose the official US Olympic Team Anthem (previously scored by John Williams) and was also commissioned to compose the music for the official launch ceremony of The Freedom Towers, the iconic designs which will eventually replace the Twin Towers at Ground Zero.

Speaking about the soundtrack, composer Paul Leonard-Morgan said: “From a music point of view, I wanted to create a sound which fitted a future set in 100 years time, so traditional orchestra was out of the question. I started off doing some band-based stuff, but it felt too safe and overly-produced, so I ended up going down a really electronic vibe - taking all my 80’s synths and present day sound modules, creating some really screwed up sounds and putting them through countless distortion and fx pedals. I was looking to create a timeless score which couldn’t be placed in any particular era. So it’s ended up being a cross between a modern dance track and evocative soundscapes.”

For the slo-mo music, I used this incredible new timestretch software called Paul. I composed and recorded new tracks with real instruments, and then slowed them down by thousands of percent to match the vibe of the visuals, adding some realtime score over the top of it. So 1 second of written score could end up lasting 10 minutes. It sounds weird, but it creates some truly beautiful sounds. Really ethereal. It takes you to a completely different world. Getting to do experimental things like this in a film score isn’t something that happens every day, so it was really exciting pushing back the boundaries.”

I am listening to this at the moment and it does sound interesting. It's definitely based in the "electro-rock" category with a few soundscape-heavy tracks. But there's something about the palette of synths and processing that makes it listenable. It's certainly more in the same vein as the recent Girl With The Dragon Tattoo mould than Silverstri's effort for the original Judge Dredd!

Leonard-Morgan does seem to have taken more care with realising his vision for the music and keeping it listenable. I need to listen to clips of the recent Total Recall - and the other disappointing remake score that I can't remember - to see how it compares.

What was the other disappointing score Alan?

Haven't heard any of his score I'm afraid. But reading some of the comments above, and Alan's about Dredd, it seems he offers some interesting music. Not sure if I'd start with Dredd!

  7. I turned out not to be a remake but Newton Howard's The Bourne Legacy that I was thinking about. I had a listen to this in full and thought that it was far more listenable than I was expecting.

(just to clarify are we still talking about Total recall? I haven't heard Dredd if we are talking about this then there's clearly a miscommunication. I am referring to total recall which I think has an awful score)

Ah, sorry D. My mistake. I was thinking that you were talking about Dredd. I do agree - and I have only listened to clips of Total Recall - that sounded terrible.

    Again, sorry for the confusion.

  14. I'm glad you caught that interview quote, too!

I'm thinking: He's saying it makes it timeless. But in reality he's severely dated it.

The way the Star Trek (TOS) series music made it timeless, not trying to sound futuristic or be odd; the orchestration and thin orchestra may not always be in favor, but the music will be timeless.

    "Dredd" however.....
