    PASSENGERS

Oh my God, what a childish borefest of chliches and ridiculous plot that was. Damn my love for planes (from which there was virtually nothing in the film) and Shearmur. The latter did his best to deliver a tender piano-driven and melancholic at parts, but always modern and melodic little score.

    In a violent contrast:

    LET THE RIGHT ONE IN

Chilling, gripping, down to earth, dead-serious and brilliant; from frame 1 to end, from the first note of the score to the last one.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

I knew you´d like it! wink Brilliant, ain´t it?

    Slumdog Millionaire

Brilliant, brilliant film. Probably the most original love story I´ve ever seen. The actors, the photography, Boyle´s direction (a bit over the top sometimes though), and....the score, yes, the score. I have to admit I hated it when I heard it some weeks ago. But to be honest, in the film it brings life and colour to the picture. I´m not sure yet if it deserves all the praise / awards / nominations it is getting, but as a film score it is truly great (the song / dance at the end is so addictive!).
On the other hand, a lot of the score is based on the "victory theme" and the "tension theme" from the "Who wants to be a Millionaire" tv show; actually, one of the most thrilling sequences of the film, by the end of it, is scored with the "tension theme" of the show; that´s why I have my doubts about all the praise the score is getting.

Anyway, as a film, totally recommended.

    4 out of 5

Slumdog was just a bit over the top? I think we saw two different films. I thought the music was way too loud!!!! I liked the film for what it was, entertainment and nothing more. Not original at all.
    listen to more classical music!

As a teacher once told me, there´s no such thing as perfection, so I´d never say 5 out of 5.

No. I would say it should get 5.
  2. As a film I'd give SDM 3.5-4 out of 5. (Which is higher than what I've given a lot lately.) Script is excellent, direction is twitchy but strong, acting from the kids is great, casting of adult Latika and main character ok (but they went for looks over characterisations there, particulary with Latika, who just doesn't seem like the two girls who play her as a young girl).

I like the Chicago Reader reviewing system. (Which I didn't just use.)

    * = Has redeeming facets (average)
** = Has enough to keep you there
    *** = Must-see
    **** = Masterpiece

A lot of films get zero by that scale.

I watched Voodoo Island with Boris Karloff but more importantly it had a score from Les Baxter far superior to the film.
