Hmmmm? Arnold / Williams??? First I've heard of that, sounds very unlikely.

Goldsmith was a protégé of Alex North as well.

Miklos Rozsa was a protégé of classical composer Heitor Villa-Lobos

    That's all I know. dizzy

    Stephen Barton - Harry Gregson-Williams?

I'd have said Powell was more of a protege of Zimmer rather than Doyle. If you classify him as one of Doyle then you might as well add Poledouris to that too. tongue
  2. Alex North
    I'M SPARTACUS!

    PROTEGE OF: Aaron Copland

    John Moran
    (Some collaborate this)

    PROTEGE OF: Phillip Glass

    John Cale
    Known for stuff, I guess.

PROTEGE OF: John Cage (maybe that's why Cale has written pretty much nothing since "American Psycho"...)

    Robert Millerb]
    Have no idea.

    PROTEGE OF: Aaron Copland

    [b]Roy Hargrove

I don't think he's done a score, without checking IMDB.

    PROTEGE OF: Wynton Marsalias.

    Steve Porcaro
    Some stuff.

PROTEGE OF: James Newton Howard (and still in the "relative" camp at times)

    Maroco Beltrami
    "Hellboy" and others.

PROTEGE OF: Jerry Goldsmith (someone collaborate this. Jerry also recommended Marco for a film score)

    Don Davis
    Matrix films.

PROTEGE OF: James Horner (even ghostwriting large portions of one of his scores)

    Linda Martinez
Wonderful score for the short "Catching Kringle", which you can watch on the official website.
In 2005, she sadly committed suicide. There's a touching picture of her sitting next to him.

    PROTEGE OF: Elmer Bernstein

I know of a protege of Delerue, but I want to keep his name quiet while I see if folks ata certain label know about it and that the protege might have copy of masters that are missing.
The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else.
  3. Ed Shearmur and Ilan Eshkeri - proteges of Michael Kamen
James Horner studied under Gyorgi Ligeti (not sure if you call it a 'protege' per se)
George Delerue was more a protege of Darius Milhaud than he was Auric

The whole thing about Arnold/Williams seems bogus to me. David Arnold was still a music and drama student at a community college in Luton, England, while Williams was winning an Oscar for Schindler's List!

I've never heard anything about Arnold and Mancina being proteges of Williams. In fact, I don't know any current film composers that were under Williams' "wing", so to speak.

    ELLIOT GOLDENTHAL

Protege of: John Corigliano and Aaron Copland

    DANNY ELFMAN

Protege of: Nobody! (well, maybe Herrmann, Rota, Prokofiev and Duke Ellington, if you count absent influences)
    I am extremely serious.

You sure about that? What about Shirley Walker ;-)
And didn't Elfman say in an interview that a famous composer helped on the orchestrations and how to do the score, on his first, Pee Wee?

    Blank Neely

    PROTEGE OF: Michael Kamen

    John Williams

PROTEGE OF: Henry Mancini (or so a Google search says)

    William Ross

PROTEGE OF: Dennis McCarthy (I think it's safe to say)

Q: Of course the music is indelible in the minds of so many horror fans. Is it right to say that you do have some of Goldsmith's themes retained in there?

John Moore: No. What we did is, we hired the composer is Marco Beltrami, who I've done a movie with before and who's done a bunch of stuff…

Q: A lot of horror movies.

John Moore: Yes. But intriguingly, he was a student of Goldsmith's.

    Q: Oh, OK.

John Moore: He was actually one of his proteges. He worked with Goldsmith for years and years. They actually were very close friends until Jerry died tragically. So Marco, if you listen closely to the score, what you haven't heard yet obviously, but towards the very end there is a motif of Goldsmith's that he utilized in the score.

Um...no. The two never even lived in the same country as one another.

Arnold hasn't been known as a protoge of anyone - he listened to lots of John Barry growing up as well as many other favorite film composers, but that's about as close as it gets...

Sure, there were several people helping him out in the early days (like most composers), but he was never an institutionalized protegé of anyone.

And Williams was not a PROTEGÉ of Mancini. Sure, Mancini appreciated him and used him on his own PETER GUNN recording, for example, but that hardly qualifies.

I think fans like to think composers are protegés of other composers just because they share a similar style or because they brushed past each other a couple of times. But it requires far more than that. I think this would be better served with substantiated CERTAINTY. Speculation is pointless.

  9. If I were to call Williams a protege of anybody, it would be somebody giving him serious advice which Williams remembers to this day. Bernard Herrmann.

Someone giving sporadic "advice" still doesn't qualify as a master-protegé relationship, though. Herrmann was supportive of Williams in many cases (and, as the story goes, urged him to write his first symphony), but they didn't have THAT much to do with one another.

Absolutely not a protege of James Horner. He orchestrated for him, which is not the same thing. Robert Elhai is hardly a protege of Elliot Goldenthal! Anyway, if Don is a protege of any composer it's Joe Harnell for whom he worked early in his career.
