HOLY SHIT! BREAKING NEWS OF THE YEAR!

from Mikael's Upcoming Film Scores Blog
    http://upcomingfilmscores.blogspot.com/ … kness.html

John Corigliano, one of the most acclaimed composers of contemporary concert music who wrote the groundbreaking score for Altered States in 1980 and won an Oscar for The Red Violin ten years ago, is making a spectacular comeback to the film scoring stage. The Gorfaine-Schwartz Agency confirms that Corigliano is doing the music for Edge of Darkness, the new thriller from director Martin Campbell, starring Mel Gibson as a detective who uncovers a government collusion when investigates the death of his activist daughter. The film is based on the 1985 TV miniseries which featured a score by Michael Kamen and Eric Clapton. GK Films produces for release on November 11.

Great news indeed. Though didn't someone post about this already in the Upcoming scores thread?

The original was also directed by Martin Campbell so I'm looking fdrward to seeing this update. The original TV series was stunning though very much of it's time and climate.

I still have the score by Kamen / Clapton which was released as a 6 track EP 12", great music it is too.

Indeed; it's one of the most awaited assignments for me too! Hope it's not too far into the experimental areas though wink

I don't mind. I absolutely love Altered States which is a very challenging listen. I say bring it on.

And why not!? Red Violin is a lovely score, I'm just saying I really love the challenge of scores like Altered States which is still my favourite of his.

Now if only someone would release REVOLUTION.

" Warner Brothers. They had a very different idea of what the film should be. With Mel Gibson starring, they wanted it to be more of an action film. So they filmed more violent scenes, and wanted a score to match the macho image they wanted to create for their star. If I had been asked to score a Mel Gibson action film, I would have refused it – not because it isn’t a perfectly valid idea, but because it is wrong for me. On the other hand, this happens all the time. Howard Shore – whose music replaced mine -had exactly the same thing happen to his score for King Kong, which he’d composed, recorded, and had replaced by James Newton Howard’s music. It just hadn’t happened to me before.”"

Yes, very down to earth, and clear:

What are your views on the film business after this and your other experiences in this field? Will you ever score another film?
JC: “If the right film comes along, I would do another film. I was well paid for this film, and therefore feel that the new company had the right to choose something else. If I had been given a small fee, however, I would feel very differently about things. So if I do another film, it will also have to come with a fee that compensates for the fact that the company may not actually use the music. That’s just reality.”

One of the most interesting film-music related articles i read for long. Apart the fact that it concerns a very interesting event in modern film music, it's very short in length, informative and completely spot-on.

Varese doesn't have any more copies of Revolution. Was this a limited edition or not?

I was hoping to pick it up later.
  2. They will issue a standard release of it this year. The Club release was just an early gesture for ... members of the Club. Hmmm...

  3. If Warner Bros. has got any brains, they'll strike while hte iron is hot, and let some label license out "Edge of Darkness".

In my opinion the Red Violin is truly special. This was one year that the Oscar voting got it correct

I just understood that Glass was rejected for his material on Coco and Igor being replaced by Yared late in the filming. This rejecting of scores is a lot more prevelant than I ever thought
