  1. Thread: Take 2

A few days ago, about January 25th, on the recommendation of a fellow board member, I downloaded a composition program called FL Studio -- keep in mind that was the first time I ever composed anything, and I have no formal training what so ever, so I am still learning. I've played around with it, had to download samples elsewhere to make up for absence of samples or replace very poor ones like the trumpet.

First 24 hours I made this piece -- my very first ever:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbvtRFK8pKU

Then I made this one, which has a lot going one at once:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9u2rP-20qpQ

Then I made this crappy one:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwokhVDSkWk

Which I summed up in my previous thread like so:
It has random notes. I decided to just go crazy, but I did try to keep the notes sounding nice and at some kind of harmonizing level at times.
While the underlyining melody is what inspired the piece (and as a whole it's NOTHING like in my head -- on purpose) it itself isn't getting a full presance in this piece and is competing with everything else. This will NOT be for everybody; it was barely for me a couple times!

But as they say, even great ideas can come from failure. Or in this case, dancing with failure as if you were going to take it home and make love to it.

The piece after that was inspired by a well known radio program called "Hearts of Space" and as a result I have named the cue just that:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLd47MWq3-M

Deciding to go straight down a very odd route and inspired by a piece by another composer, I composed this "off" piece:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kklGpSVwKe0

The following piece was inspired by Silvestri's work on "CHiPs", but the trumpet I had at the time was so cheap sounding that it ended up giving the piece more of a cheesey overall feel:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rst9Pan-6DQ

After having my fun I decided to go down a route with a piece almost purely of structure with the same theme, resolution and bridge playing off each other at times:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5tFqFECOMM

And as of today as I create my new post, I instroduce my first action cue:

I thought you wanted the other thread.....closed? confused

    Will listen later on.

  2. Yes, closed because it was way out of hand, and Erik's suggestion of starting anew was a correct path of choice.

Sorry, Justin, not again. I tried in the previous thread to give you some serious feedback, come back when you've done some homework!

Justin... my advice would be to STOP, print out all of Mikael's feedback, read every word over and over and over again until it's ingrained into your mind, buy or borrow some books from the library, study and then come back when you have something that is listenable. Seriously, Justin, I can't listen to your 'music.' It's all over the place, there's no structure... it's basically random incoherent noise. Now maybe there is a place for this sort of 'experimental, improv' music somewhere in this world but I don't think you are going to have many film music fans on your side here.

So, again, Justin, stop and do some serious research and studying... even on just the basics (which I don't thing you have a grasp on) and then write a solid 1 minute piece that will showcase your new skills.

  3. That's why I told him that there is no technical feedback I can give him, because he just can't compose. There is just nothing to it!

Anthony on the other hand did something far more sensible and has potential to work on. This is why I could give decent feedback to him and not to Justin.

  4. Justin, I don't know if you are serious with your music, or if you just want to have some fun. But when I listened to these little tunes, I felt I was re listening to the electronic music Ross did in "Friends". And that was a hilarious joke in those series considering he just played random notes and effects. This is that kind of feeling I'm reliving here. I honestly hope you just have some fun with this.
    waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh

William, do you have a continual urge to put people down? Of course I used loops and samples. Perhaps you missed the bit that suggested it was the first thing I've ever done on GarageBand? confused rolleyes

Anthony, I'm not trying to put you down. It's just the fact that you have previously failed to mention that you're using loops, and in so doing have caused others to believe that everything they hear is a product of your own imagination. Give credit where credit is due. My pieces, for instance, use no loops whatsoever. Granted, I've messed around with loops in the past, but have always noted that little detail to others when loops have been present. I'm not saying you shouldn't use loops, just that you should maybe say you are when you are.

  5. Piece I created and have titled "Green Solemn Pastures". Cello, strings, oboe, xylaphone, and some muffled toms around the end. Took me nine hours to get this piece done.

Also, Justin, I don't know if I would call my OWN composition "a beautiful piece", like you do in that youtube video. No matter the quality of your noodling.

    Google defines noodling as:

    - Noodling is a southern US practice and sport of fishing for catfish using only one's bare hands. Catfisting, grabbling, graveling, hogging ...

    - A number of people make their livings by just reprocessing the old mine dumps. They either sift through the waste dumps by hand or use one of the ...

That's the great thing about your own personal opinion: it's just that. So go ahead and not feel good about calling your work "beautiful" -- whatever makes you happy.
