Exactly - it's simply watching my diet, and doing as much exercise as I can until it hurts too much (although, I have to admit, I find it difficult to watch my diet because I'm a bit of a 'foodie'.

In case anyone was wondering, my back injury came from a car accident - although, ironically, I was outside the car at the time! My wife and I were coming home one day and we got a flat tyre on the freeway, so we pulled off the road and I started changing it. I'd got the car up on the jack and was taking the bolts off the wheel, when out of nowhere another car appeared and slammed into the back of our car. Now, fortunately, I was able to get out of the way before my car hit me (otherwise I would have been squished), but as I jumped up and back out of the way I landed on the metal guard rail at the side of the road. Long story short: I fractured my pelvis, un-aligned two vertebrae at the bottom of my spine, and suffered nerve and muscular damage. After 2-3 months of therapy at a spinal specialist, they basically said "we've done what we can do, you just have to cope with whatever pain you have now", and that was that.

So now, in my daily routine, I don't suffer a lot of problems, but if I do any strenuous exercise (or even if I do something like sneezing with my body in the wrong position), the muscles spasm, and I basically have to sit down for a few hours until the pain subsides. Exercise wise, I can do as much "light walking" as I want, and swimming is good because my body weight is supported, but running or weightlifting or any kind of competitive sport is out of the question because it jarrs my back too much.

What time do you get UP, Christopher?
About the time I usually get to bed I wager?!?

That's one of the good things in the US, though: those 24/7 gyms. No way you could find anything open in The Netherlands around that time. slant

    That's bloody dreadful, Jon.
Are you on any kind of pain therapy? I know of similar cases where indeed the damage itself isn't treatable any more, but where a lot of treatment and therapy is still giong on specifically to cope with pain and any distress.

So now, in my daily routine, I don't suffer a lot of problems

So no problems with sitting or lying in specific positions?
Guess indeed swimming (and walking: a hugely underestimated training regime!) is THE sport for you now.

Nothing specific, but I always have painkillers and anti-inflammatory pills in the house. I was on vicodin (not sure what it's called in Europe) for a while after the accident.

Not really, although if I sit or lie or stand in the same position for a long time it hurts. For almost a year after the accident it was difficult to go from sitting to standing, or from standing to sitting, without it hurting a lot. One of the reasons I bought the car I have now - a Nissan Frontier truck - is because the seats are the same height as my ass, and I don't have to bend down to get in it.

    That's too bad, Jon.

This thread excites me a little as I just recently started working out in earnest. I've probably been at it for a month or so, now. I go to a gym every morning from 5:30 to 6:00 am.

    shocked

Christ! That's like in the middle of the friggin' night!! I had to get up at 6:00 and do physical stuff when I was in the army more than 10 years ago, but there's no way in hell I would do that voluntarily now.
    I am extremely serious.

    There's a 6 AM!?
  2. I have to be at work between 6:30-6:45, so that time in the morning is just the most convenient. My alarm goes off at 5:13 am. It's really early. I think I would actually enjoy working out a lot more if I did it later in the day. It's really hard to drag myself out of bed at that hour, and I find myself getting really grumpy if I'm not in bed before 10:00pm.

Jon, I'm sorry about your accident. Swimming, though, is a REALLY healthy thing to do. I think you could go a long long way with just that. By the way, you spelled "tire" wrong wink

Before 22:00, eh? That's basically when my evening starts! I'm never in bed before midnight, even though I have to get up at 7:00.

Whoo! I tried Zumba. dizzy Fun, fun, fun!

OK, the first session was totally frustrating, because I couldn´t keep up with the instructor who is obviously made of rubber, but I´m definitely going back! It´s so much fun. Dancing, music, what more do you want. It´s one huge party. Even if you can´t keep up, you just keep dancing, everyone can do it. Really. And I didn´t even notice I was doing a work out! Lots of fun! Everyone is going nuts.
    spin

On YouTube there are many videos of Zumba, but no decent ones that captures the spirit of Zumba in my opinion. I found two that give some sort of impression.

So will you be doing this regularly, you think?
Or was this just a one-off?

Dancing is brilliant for keeping in shape, and many "fitness hypes" (dating back to the earliest Aerobics craze) are in fact based on it!
    bhangra

Is it expensive though to join?
(I'm always slightly weary of new trends...they tend to be quite costly slant )

It's not expensive. Our local sports centre has this all-in card system. You buy a sports card and then you can join any class you like, as often as you like. Fitness, spinning, aerobics, Pilates, Zumba, steps, whatever. Once you're inside the building you can do whatever you want.

I will go back for sure! punk
I really need more excercise and I can't remember the last time I did something as fun as this. I'm curious though if I will be able to keep up, even after a couple of weeks. If I still suck then, I can always join another class, do something else instead. But I'm sure that won't be as fun. The magic is in the music and the dancing and the whole atmosphere.

I've started training again since last Friday evening, only light weights at the moment and half an hour of aerobic work just before that. Plenty of water and cutting down on bad foods and eating more salads and fruit.

I can already feel and notice slight changes in my body. smile
