Doesn't really qualify as a photo of the day but I wasn't sure where to put it.
We managed to get a photo last night of one of the badgers that we have seen visiting our garden recently. This was taken about 12:15am but I have seen them snuffling around at the base of the bird feeders as late as 02:00am and as early as 11:30pm.The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Nice picture Alan. I've never seen such animal. Is it common in your area? Here cats are the wildest thing we might encounter.
Why is it deadly dangerous?Kazoo -
- CommentTimeAug 6th 2011
It can get aggressive very easily, and it has a bite that can go through straight to your bone and beyond. In fact, I have an acquaintance who experienced just that.
But it's nice to look at, for sure.I am extremely serious. -

Dangerous schmamerous! Okay, you wouldn't want to surprise one and corner it but a Badger will scarper once disturbed by humans.
Howabout Foxes Alan? Here in Bristol, particularly my neck of the woods, there seems to be an explosion in the population of urban foxes, not one night goes by without seeing one and I've even seen five in a single evening. The big mystery for me is where the hell do they all go in daylight hours? On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

When I came across a badger in the garden it just took a look at me and just retreated away. I don't think they are too aggressive to us. But the species of badger in the US is very aggressive I believe - and photos I have seen of them suggest they are very bad tempered.
I have seen a fox only the once here: crossing a nearby road late at night when I was driving home. The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

Yeah, the British species is very shy and retiring. Perhaps Norwegian badgers are more aggressive?
As I said, there are a lot of Foxes around my way, some of them are the biggest I've ever seen. I haven't seen any Hedgehogs this year....yet.On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

Nice photo Alan!
Are they increasing there? I've heard a bit about the controversy over badger cull in the UK.

By the way, this is a Japanese badger I saw some years ago... it didn't notice me for a while so I could watch it feeding on the ground.

When I was a kid I was told that it would be a good idea to put egg shells in your boots when going out in the forest, because if a badger bites you it will normally continue until it has crushed your bones, but if it bites through the egg shells it will think it has crushed your bones and will cease biting.
Of course this was probably just a story adults came up with to scare the hell out of us children.
In any case, I'm reminded of this->

A bit of a weird one this, but I was watching one of those programmes where they show you an animal dissection and I couldn't believe it when they showed the inside of a leatherback turtle's oesophagus:

I think it's weird there's not even one bit of lettuce left there...
Seriously, I wouldn't even know how our own looks on the inside. And I'm not going to take a look with google.
Ok, I just googled. It's different, yes.
Speaking of wonders of nature. Watched an episode of Life last night on the TV. The one about plants. I loved the way they explained how slow plants live in our experience of time and I love the way they fastforward the plant life all the time so that they almost look like... animals.
And, we have a passiflora in our garden and the children wondered what the curly parts were and that was so amazingly explained in this episode! The tentacles searching for branches to cling on to and then hold on tight looked so animal like watching that with the time-lapse photography. -

The programme dissecting the loggerhead turtle was called Inside Nature's Giants, shown on Channel 4 here in the UK.
These spines start at the mouth and run right down their extended oesophagus leading down to their stomach (the oesophagus actually curves down past and under the stomach and back up the side before it connects with the stomach).
Since their diet is almost exclusively jellyfish, and because jellyfish are >90% water, the turtles have to "stack up" the swallowed jellyfish in their oesophagus and then squeeze out the water with muscles lining the oesophagus. The spines down the length of the pipe prevent the jellyfish themselves being pushed back out of the animal during the muscle contraction.
As you can see, it was a very educational programme! The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -
