Does anyone know why the Russian shuttle project (Buran) fall apart?

The Captain had it right, Pawel: simply because the USSR and its underlying economic structure collapsed.
If memory serves the only shuttle they had was destroyed in a fire or something because not only was there no more money to actually launch the thing, but there was no money to pay for the upkeep or any security. So it stood rusting in a hangar somewhere and was destroyed in an industrial accident.

  2. The American shuttle program wasn't a failure per se, but it led to two disasters that both belong to the most tragic in human spaceflight history (Challenger and Columbia). It served its purpose (which, eventually, was nothing else than servicing ISS) and earlier led to some in-space experiments. The regress was mostly due to the fact that the shuttle would not be able to leave Earth's orbit so it must have been a huge disappointment after the much-heralded Apollo project.

Ironically, now that they are preparing (and already started launching tests) the Orion spacecraft it's a return to non-reusable crafts (a shuttle would be good to go after a month or two). Knowing a bit of the history, it's also quite tragic to say that the shuttles that disintegrated were the two first shuttles to be launched into space (one shuttle used in tests, Enterprise, never left the atmosphere and rather than reutilizing that one, NASA preferred to commission Discovery, which also, if memory serves me well, was the last shuttle to ever fly?)

Eventually the single-launch craft seems to do better in general. Timmer's right about the Vostok design, that's what Soyuz is really. And it still flies.

Especially that after the USSR fell apart they didn't "own" Baikonur anymore, did they?

I'm not sure what the legal status was at that time? I don't think everything 'Sovjet' immediately reverted back to ownership by the pertinent 'previous satellite'. I think that was more of a de facto development when the (ex) Sovjet guarding and operating the environment and the craft simply weren't paid any more over time, and they just walked out.
Happened a lot. Leaving all sorts of military and scientific facilities in limbo!

  4. It happened in Poland as well. Before the Soviet forces actually left the country, their equipment downright soared on the black market. It helped the local gangs, to say the least.

Incredibly is more appropriate. They plan to intercept an asteroid and move part of it into the Moon's orbit, to later use the Orion craft to send a manned mission to.

Mars 2035! punk (There or there abouts.)
  5. I was talking more about the fact that they don't get back to the reusability of shuttle rather than what they plan to do with the Orion smile

  6. I know this isn't really what this thread is about but something that I think is utterly cool is that I received a package in the post today containing:
-A new John Williams score for a new 'Star Wars' film!
-The first ever bespoke film score to a Tarantino film (Kill Bill 2 doesn't count for me) written by Ennio Morricone!
    That is utterly cool!

If the stunt itself isn't cool enough, the camerawork definitely is. Did they use a steadycam for this??? shocked

In a happy surprise from the Rod Roddenberry San Diego ComicCon panel, it was announced that Rod had culled through archives and found cut segments of Star Trek Original Series episodes, plus other behind-the-scenes bits. It will be released on a Blu-ray later in 2016 with a brand new documentary by Roger Lay, Jr (who was part of the team that did the awesome TNG and ENT Blu-ray documentaries). The full press release is after the break.

  21. Speaking of utterly cool...

And utterly funny, in 2003 they made a game out of the "Futurama" TV series but as a nice bonus an video was released of all the cut scenes edited together, with tiny portions of the game. It's not regualr show animation, but computer generated animation, but it works nonetheless and it's like watching a real episode, but in the series' prime:

  22. Just now I heard someone say on TV that the Main Theme from Star Trek was originally written with a Theremin in mind but that Roddenberry would bring in the soprano Norman, a friend of his or something, to sing the part. I didn't know that.
