25 years ago, in 1984, Arvo Pärt's Tabula rasa launched ECM's New Series. The recording indeed marked a new beginning and not only for Pärt's work, providing impulses for contemporary composition at many levels. The power of Pärt's music, moreover, underlined by the conviction of his religious feeling, struck a chord amongst listeners which continues to resonate. As fellow composer Steve Reich has observed, Pärt's music of spiritual yearning seems to fulfill a human need.

In Principio, Pärt's new album, his eleventh for ECM, is both a continuation and a recording which posits fresh directions in his music, offers fresh colors. Four pieces, "In principio", "La Sindone", "Cecilia, vergine romana" and "Für ... Read more

I have this CD - it is very good. I'm really into Pärt at the moment, I sang his "Beatitudes" a while ago and early April we're doing "Passio", his hypnotic setting of the St. John Passion. He is a brilliant choral composer who really create wonders with very small (which is not to say it is easy music) gestures. There is one moment in "The Beatitudes" which is pure magic: the word REJOICE, which is set to a very unusual and totally surprising chord.

On a sidenote, did you know that ECM's founder and producer, Manfred Eicher, actually writes some film scores?

No I didn't? I like a lot of stuff on the ECM label, Pat Metheny, Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal to name a few.

Part is a fantastic composer, a true original.

Wow, this seems like a definite buy. I've been looking to buy something with Da Pacem Domine for a long time (it's absolutely beautiful and probably one of the most ethereal pieces from Part) yet I was never fully convinced to buy Lamentate. The sound clips from In Principio sound brilliant, though. I also like the fact that Da Pacem is here near the end, instead of the opening piece. And I love the strings backing the choir up.

I just came back from a lavish theatre production here in Oslo that recounted Norse mythology (Edda), and that employed some stunning sequences with Arvo Pärt's music. I've heard bits and pieces of Pärt over the years, but never sat down to properly explore him.

So I wonder: Where should I start? I'm particularly interested in his more spiritual music.
    I am extremely serious.

  2. Arvo Pärt's Te Deum is beautiful. And the ECM New Series album as a whole is excellent. 'Silouans Song' is another highlight

    Thanks for the recommendations!

  3. I recommend...

Love Will Tear Us A Pärt.
    Until Death Do Us Pärt.
and that Cenobites' classic We'll Tear Your Soul A Pärt.

But seriously, I personally enjoyed FRATRES and LITANY. (The latter has, casually, had The Thin Red Line compared to it - but I think it's more because of its overall melancholy tone, rather than anything specific).

  4. I need to hear Litany then. Also the pieces referred to by Alan.

  5. Also the Introduction to Annum per Annum is literally pasted into the opening of The Thin Red Line (it starts The Coral Atoll).

They didn't rip it off to fit the arrangement. They literally took a recording and pasted it into the pre-made drone by Hans.
