I've been getting into this composer's music for a couple days now. He's done some film/tv scoring, most notably the Dr. Zhivago miniseries that some members has talked about a while back, but his discography comprises mostly of piano works and some orchestral stuff. His recent album, I think, is Divenire, and it's very good with some gorgeous cues like Primavera, with its Goldenthal-esque descending string patterns, or the blossoming piano/string duo in "Divenire", which reminds me a bit of Dario Marinelli's work in Pride & Prejudice... Lots of piano tracks and some electronics laced in, like in the track "Ascolta", and the overall feel isn't dissimilar to some of Craig Armstrong's non-soundtrack work. Great for background listening while you're working, which is how I spend most of my time doing anyway.

Anyway, always trying out a new composer here. So anyone's interested, I'd recommend the Divenire album, or try the best-of compilation, that came out a year later, called "Echoes: The Einaudi Collection". It's available on Amazon.com as well.
  1. Dr Zhivago is really nice, liked it a lot
I'm affraid to say it is the only score I heard of him so far

If you like Dr. Zhivago (and why not?), then you might enjoy his score to Sotto Falso Nome. Quite eclectic though, how one track can be just a piano cue, then a track with some dark string work, then some trance/lo-fi/trip-hop, then switch to a string track, then comes another techno/electronica track. The variety of which I don't mind, and do enjoy a bit, though it's a warning to those who prefer a consistency in their listening experiences.

    Einaudi! cool

His music is delicate and introspective and makes for a nice, relaxing listen. As for his film scores... they're very sparsely spotted or underscorish. But he does score those top moments effectively.

I used to check out contemporary Italian composers quite heavily a few years back. I think I have most of his film scores. It appears that he has used quite a bit of his concert/original compositions for the movies.

While I haven't seen Dr Zhivago, I will recommend the following 2 films-
Luce dei miei occhi (Light of my eyes): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0282701/
Sparse score for an introspective film. A limo driver develops a friendship with a kid and his single mom.

    This is England: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480025/
A young, impressionable kid's journey of inculcation in a depraved, skinhead gang. He makes use of his outstanding theme from Fuori Dal Mondo for the loss of innocence.

    LP,
Perhaps you could make this the composer thread for Einaudi. Just change the thread title to LUDOVICO EINAUDI

Speaking of Fuori Dal Mondo, that's an interesting score/album. A little bit more eclectic, and organic and airy in parts. Feels more like an score than his later scoring effort, where the music is meant to underscore certain scenes/feeling. Though, since I've not seen the movie, this might not be the case.
  4. is it safe to say that Dr Zhivago is his most temporary orchestral work?
    or am I wrong?

I'd go with that statement. Recently, it's one of his most orchestrally-inclined work. His 1999 album. Eden Roc is quite sophisticated as well. It even features some duduk work from Djivan Gasparian.

There is no mention of this movie on http://www.ludovicoeinaudi.com/ either...

I guess that means I have to gather the tracks by myself, which is not bad, because that way I will have more music by him. I'm really moved...

Ludovico will perform at the Gent Jazz festival on Thursday 18 July. Other artists for the line-up that day are Ólafur Arnalds, Plaistow and Melanie de Biasio.

    Is someone interested to go?

    Could you elaborate?

I only know him of Broadchurch which won some British award (BAFTA). But I thought it was just okay as a listening experience. However I was in a bar in Ghent recently and they played some quiet music and suddenly a very attractive track. I asked the bar tender what it was and he told me about this composer.

Einaudi wrote a piece for the Artic and crashing ice from glaciers, in a campaign by Greenpeace. A bit sensational but sometimes one has to.
