Lighten up indeed, Steven. People are passionate about it and don't want to hide it and I think that while for some (not me though) it may get tiresome, I think it's a big value. And honestly, Miya and Ravi belong in my opinion to the nicest and most valuable members of MainTitles and I appreciate their contributions.

Attended a concert performed by the San Diego Symphony while on my holiday. They performed the last work from Mozart his Requiem in D Minor which I wouldn't purchase but I did enjoy the performance. They also played Bruch's #2 Violin Concerto which technically was excellent but little else.

I'm not familiar with Bruch's 2nd violin concerto but I do enjoy his 1st. I've heard that Bruch's violin works are the real acid test of anyone who consider themselves to be an excellent player.

Last week I went to the Disney concert. (thus the following text includes Lion King fanatic fever... beware! wink)

    It was good and bad.

The great thing was they performed almost all the cues from the score! Their performance was great, both Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and Broadway singers. But the biggest disappointment was... the singers performed dialogues over the score! crazy

It's really a shame, because the music performance and arrangements were really fantastic, very true to (or sometimes better than) the original, even if there were only 8 singers doing the chorus part. I never expected that they could play The Stampede so brilliantly, because all the re-recordings of that particular cue I've heard were horrible.

Another surprise was their performance and orchestration of the battle cue, which was really amazing! Honestly I thought it's better than the original recording. It's much more powerful and doesn't have cheapish synth sounds. Thankfully there weren't many dialogues on the battle scene...

I wish they would perform again without annoying dialogues. Sadly it's unlikely to happen. sad

Non-TLK music were also great. A compilation of classical pieces from Tokyo Disneyland show (a sort of "Fantasia suite") was nice. And it was interesting they combined Gavin Greenaway's song Promise with This Land from TLK... it was really nice arrangement (but with narration slant).
POTC suite was nicely performed, even though it could be better if they included more uplifting cues like Up Is Down, and I'm surprised when they played the unreleased "Jack saves Elisabeth" theme.

I don't think I will attend next year, but it was a nice experience! bunny

They played the complete final battle cue? The unreleased material?

They played all the cues except two or three minor cues. From The Once and Future King to Circle Of Life Reprise, including the complete version of The Stampede (amazing performance!), The Elephant Graveyard, and even mickey mousing cues like Reunion. The arrangements were also mostly true to the original. cool

Since it was an official Disney concert, and the conductor/arranger Brad Kelly seems to have a close connection with Disney, I assume they got access to the original score sheets.

Seeing they're giving it that attention, I hope they take steps to actually release the expanded CD for us.

I've been lucky enough to have a busy time with concerts thus far this year:

Gainesville Symphony Orchestra- Performed Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 along with America's first African Symphony (among other wonderful things).

Bond and Beyond (Jacksonville, FL)- Featured Broadway star Debbie Gravitte. Was overall a great concert. I was hoping it would have been a slight bit more Bond loyal. There was so much more I wish I could have heard. Did enjoy seeing the orchestra perform a selection of Arnold cues from Casino Royale and QoS.

It was especially fun to attend this one because I was able to see it with two huge Bond collectors. The sort of fellas that have a sole room in their homes for their Bond stuff. I was able to transport them and assist them in setting up a table where they could show off some of their collection.

Also met possibly the greatest Bond poster collector in the world.

Along with Bond music they heavily some wonderful Henry Mancini Pink Panther bits. They covered my favorites with that series minus some amazing themes from A Shot In the Dark.

Australian Chamber Orchestra with world renowned soprano Dawn Upshaw: Saw this one with my girlfriend celebrating our two-year anniversary along with my Birthday. Amazing performance. Looking forward to purchasing their final recording after they finish their tour at Carnage Hall.

They made minor changes to the program (their first piece). For the life of me I am unable to remember what they performed. It is killing me because I would love to track it down and purchase. The composer wrote it when he was 19 at the early part of the past century. I believe his name was Russian and began with a 'T'. It featured two movements. Was certainly composed in the modern style. The first movement had hauntingly beautiful themes, and the second was largely dissonant.

Their performance of the Winter Morning Walks was incredible. They will be recording it for the first time later this year. It great reminded me of some Ralph Vaughan Williams (not his traditional) and John Tavener. This one was composed by Maria Schneider.

Finally, on May 5th I will be watching the Alabama Symphony perform the works of John Williams in Birmingham, AL. This was my primary Christmas present from my girlfriend this Past Christmas. This will be my first Williams concert. Very excited!

Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  2. I attended the annual film music concert of out local philharmonic orchestra in Siegen, Germany. The venue is comparatively small but they will play six nights of the program, so that says something about the popularity of these concerts. The night unfolded as follows:

    1. Cutthroat Island: Overture (Debney)
    2. Gone With the Wind: Tara's Theme (Steiner)
    3. The Private Life of Elizabeth and Essex: Suite (Korngold)
    4. Rebecca: Suite (Waxman)
    5. Zwei kleine Italiener: Medley (Luis)
    6. My Fair Lady: Symphonic Picture (Loewe; Bennett)

    Intermission

    7. The Witches of Eastwick: Devil's Dance (Williams)
    8. Terminator: Theme (Fiedel)
    9. True Lies: Por una Cabeza (Gardel, arr. Williams)
    10. The Fabulous Word of Amelie: Suite (Tiersen)
    11. Basic Instinct: Theme (Goldsmith)
    12. Frozen: Suite (Lopez)
    13. Star Wars: Suite (Williams)
    Encores:
    14. Miss Marple's Theme: (Goodwin)
    15. Pirates of the Caribbean: Suite (Badelt)

This, an orchestra and conductor in top form as well as an enthusiastic audience made this a fun night.
