I see Christopher Gunning has updated his site:
http://www.christopher-gunning.co.uk/index.html
In the latest news section I couldn't help noticing this:
Anja Bukovec, the Slovenian virtuoso violinist, will play CG's new "Poirot Fantasy," and music from CG's "Firelight" in Lubljana with the Slovenian Radio Symphony Orchestra on May 14th and 15th 2009. In the same concerts, the orchestra will also play CG's "La Vie en Rose."
I don't suppose anybody is from Lubljana around here?
I've also noticed that there's a concert suite of Poirot music called "Poirot Variants". It's only been played at concerts. Is somebody familiar with this?
Apparently he also adapted it for winds, and it's been recorded by the Royal Air Force on the CD Let There Be Music. -

Nopes! That would be Alan Williams!
Gunning is the awesome Brit composer who has scored a ton of movies plus TV work including the ultra-popular Poirot theme.
He did do the documentary Wild Africa (awesome uplifting score) though.
Check out his scores to Firelight (romance meltissimo), Cold Lazarus (intelligent sci-fi score), La Mome (gorgeousness a la Yared) among many others. -

FIRELIGHT is gorgeous.
And the KARAOKE / COLD LAZARUS CD is a must-have - great segue from moody jazz through appropriate source cues to Wagnerian, bold sci fi music!I am extremely serious. -

Just to be cruel for a second: I remember seeing that on TV and having fun picking which GLADIATOR album track would be the basis for the next cue.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

Just to be fair, the whole score is not a Gladiator rip-off. Quite a lot of it rips off other things instead. -

Symphony No. 3
Symphony No. 4
Oboe Concerto
Verity Gunning (oboe)
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Christopher Gunning
Christopher Gunning is best known for his film and television work, for which he has won four BAFTA awards (for La Vie en rose, Agatha Christie’s Poirot, Middlemarch, and Porterhouse Blue) and three Ivor Novello awards (for Rebecca, Under Suspicion, and Firelight).
Born in 1944 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Gunning attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where his tutors included Brian Trowell, James Gibb, Edmund Rubbra and Richard Rodney Bennett. His compositions for the concert hall include four symphonies and a number of concertos.
Here the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performs the premiere recording of Symphonies No. 3 and No. 4, coupled with Concerto for Oboe and String Orchestra. Symphony No. 3 was composed in the aftermath of a turbulent 2005. The work is an expression of this anxiety and the result is a chaotic, colourful musical landscape inspired by the Welsh countryside to which he escaped. While Symphony No. 3 is predominantly turbulent, Symphony No. 4 offers a different view of Gunning’s world. Here the listener is treated to a sense of triumph over adversity, and herein the work is more direct and tonal. Concerto for Oboe and String Orchestra was composed as a Christmas present for his daughter Verity, who here performs her Concerto. Middle Eastern influences are evident in the central movement for it was composed on the day which Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat died and reflects Gunning’s sense of sorrow for the region.
The works are conducted by the composer, and thus can be considered definitive performances.
This is the first disc in an on-going series of music by Christopher Gunning. -
