    My reaction:

    WHYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!

Seriously, this looks like a fantastic set, and I'm glad that they have preserved the album programs for most discs and have the extra cues as bonus tracks. I wonder why they didn't do it for a few of them, though - like PEE WEE and NIGHTMARE.

As I already have everything that has ever been released of Danny's music, and $500 is an impossibility for me, I have to let is pass. But I would REALLY, REALLY like the bonus disc with odds'n'ends. I wish it were available separately or through iTunes or something. Oh well, sometimes you just have to bite the dust....

Too bad they couldn't get FAMILY DOG for this one either (except the title sequences). I wonder how it can magically disappear from the first MFADT to when they were looking for it for the AMAZING STORIES sets. Strange.
    I am extremely serious.
  1. Watching the video on the linked site I see that there's a hint that only the first 1000 units are going to have this special treatment.

Then reading over on the FSM messageboard I read someone suggesting that the subsequent units may be less lavish - and cheaper. And even that some of the discs may be available separately.

I hope that's the case as I would like to pick up one or two of the individual titles that I don't currently have.

It seems very exhausting to me, I'm glad I'm not an Elfman fan, though I would like to hear those cues from THE JAR.

    That is pure speculation though.

I would really, really like to have this, but 500 dollars is so far over the top that the earth has become as smooth as a billiard ball.

  3. They should have DROPPED al the Batman material; LLLR have got that covered.

They should have also not included frequently requested previously released titles, like Pee-Wee and Nightmare, and instead has those seperated as complete, remastered limited editions later. That would have trimmed the size and price down nicely and made it more affordable. Some awesome stuff on there, but I don't think I'll make enough money in ten years to afford it. It's going on my I Want, But Will Probably NEVER Be Able To Afford list.

Then it wouldn't have been a complete Burton/Elfman collaboration box set. What's the point of have a box set like this if you aren't going to include Batman, Pee-Wee, etc.

  4. Okay, here is a FIXED box set tracklisting -- how it could/should have been; "Batman" has been dropped because LLLR did it (except the worktape stuff); "Batman Returns" has been dropped since LLLR 2CD is coming soon; previously releases material has been removed -- only unreleased cues; "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" has been droppedc since is deserves it's own complete release by a label (if anyone did it, LLLR would), ditto "Edward Scissorhands". I left on repeated material from "The Nightmare Before Christmas" simply because this set beautifully covers everything, even to score-noly songs!

From the official site of the music box:

This collection has also allowed Danny Elfman a unique opportunity to remaster his scores with particular emphasis on improving sonics on both Batman and Sleepy Hollow. In the case of Batman, a better-sounding source of the music was located and re-edited to re-create a superior version of this legendary soundtrack album.

Which makes me wonder, did Elfman know what Lalaland was doing with the new 2-disc Batman release? And did LLLR know what Elfman was doing? They probably worked independently? Or does LLLR get input from Elfman for the Batman Returns release? And since I saw complaints about the mediocre quality of the film version tracks on the new LLLR album, will this version be an improvement on that?

By the way, on the list of people who contributed with interviews for the Burton/Elfman accompanying book, are amongst others:

    Jon Brion (composer)
    Carter Burwell (composer)
    Michael Giacchino (composer)
    Alexandre Desplat (composer)
    Philip Glass (composer)
    Deborah Lurie (composer)
    Thomas Newman (composer)
    James Newton Howard (composer)
    John Powell (composer)
    Marc Shaiman (composer)
    Edward Shearmur (composer)
    Howard Shore (composer)
    Alan Silvestri (composer)
  7. Tim Burton is producing in the in-development film:

    "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"

This glows with all kinds of awesome. If you dont' think so, try reading this description of the film:

It's a 3D re-imagining of Lincoln's life that depicts the 16th president as an axe-throwing, highly accomplished killer of vampires, an obsession of his since those bloodsuckers supposedly took the life of his mother. Taking revenge, Lincoln wreaks havoc on the vampires and their slave-owning protectors. Only in Hollywood would such wild fantasy with the reputation of one of America's greatest Presidents be in such demand. Fox wanted the project so badly that when the filmmakers came onto the lot, the studio had bloody axes and bloody footprints strewn about, and arranged for a bugle player in a Confederate uniform playing "Taps" to accompany them to the meeting with studio executives.

Elfman already did a few themes for a vampire killer film, namely Richard Elfman's MODERN VAMPIRES (aka THE REVENANT), while Michael Wandmacher did the rest. That's a fun score, so more like that would be nice.
    I am extremely serious.
  8. At least five films, many recent, that Burton produced on, were not scored by Elfman.

Dannyboy's dance card seems to be full for that period -- we'll likely get a "theme" and another Deborah Lurie score.

    New project for Elfman

    Real Steel

Danny Elfman has been hired to score Shawn Levy’s upcoming action drama Real Steel. The movie set in the near-future where 2,000-pound robots that look like humans do battle stars Hugh Jackman, Kevin Durand, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie and Hope Davis.

Look at the premise: it screams for a kick ass Elfman score!

I've also grown increasingly weary of the "noisy" Elfman over the last few years. I rarely play stuff like MARS ATTACKS, MEN IN BLACK, THE FRIGHTENERS, FLUBBER, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE anymore. Even BATMAN.

I do, however, like the calmer, more textural stuff. Or the early Rota-type pastiche.
