Elfman talks about a lot in this great new interview, here. Including JOHAN SODERQVIST's "LET THE RIGHT ONE IN", gorgeous score. Now compare this with Giacchino's snoozefest.

Please list your top five scores of the decade and why?
[I could tell you] my favorite film scores of the last decade.
Let the Right One In — Johan Soderqvist. It was haunting and it stayed with me enough to go and buy the soundtrack, which I rarely do.
Birth — Alexandre Desplat. It caught me really off guard and felt so fresh.
Atonement — Dario Marianelli. It was really so perfectly suited for the film and managed some very tricky balancing acts between the different elements.
The Hours — Philip Glass. Why? Simple: It’s Philip Glass. He’s the greatest. End of story!
Requiem for a Dream — Clint Mansell. This has to be my favorite of this last decade. Perfectly suited to the film. Completely original, and I couldn’t get it out of my head. In fact, I still think it’s stuck there.

    A man with great taste.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Indeed. Cool picks! Can't imagine the honour Söderqvist must feel, knowing that Danny Elfman himself bought one of his scores!

Thanks for the heads-up, D. I missed this interview last year.

Danny Elfman to Write Music for Disneyland Hong Kong’s ‘Mystic Manor’ ride

Danny Elfman has signed on to compose music for the ride Mystic Manor at Disneyland Hong Kong. The attraction is a new version based on the classic Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland in California and is due to make its debut in early 2013.

Yeah, I heard about that a few weeks ago.

Should be interesting, and just adds to the incredible range of media and venues for which Elfman has written music. Hope it gets a release somehow.

First John Debney, then Mark Mancina, now Danny Elfman.

Could be quite good as Thor said.

The Elfman box is starting to arrive on people's doorsteps.

It's kinda heartbreaking that I was never able to dish out the $700 for this set, especially since I'm also thanked in the credits section:

Seriously, because I'm very much into all things obscure re: Elfman, I alerted them to some things they should consider releasing, like the music for the MOMA exhibition or the Stainboy internet flicks. They did.

passé. Horner already did that in Troy.

  2. Was anybody aware Elfman is actualyl credited with an episode score for "Pee Wee's Playhouse"? I thought he just did the movies, but upon checking the composers credited to the series (half the Mothersaubhg credits on IMDB are WRONG, so far), low & behold:

"Monsters" (this is the last part of the episode):

EDIT: Make that now two episodes:
    "Cowboy and Cowntess":

    And "Store" (2.3)
    "Pee-Wee Catches a Cold" (2.4)

Yes, I'm aware of that. He did some bits and pieces, some of which are available on the MUSIC FOR A DARKENED THEATRE, VOL. 2 compilation.

Although it's not much of a reveal, at this years D23 (Disney convention) it was confirmed that Danny Elfman will be doing Tim Burton's Frankenweenie, a project that's very much in development right now.

Most remarkable about this? It's stop-motion... and black/white. Pretty much intrigued.

Cool, but not wholly unexpected! wink

Elfman wasn't around Burton when the latter did his FRANKENWEENIE short (boasting a nice David Newman score instead) many years ago. Should be interesting to hear Danny's take on the feature film version.

I also wonder if it could be a musical, since all Burton's stop-motion films have been musicals so far...

Any Elfman-Burton project automatically earns my interest. lick

I'm also interested to know what happened to that Maleficent movie Burton was rumoured to direct.
  3. He's not going to direct it. They said that David Yates or David O' Russell would be replacing him.

Quite lengthy soundclips (over 25 min. worth of music to be heard) from Danny Elfman's score to Tim Burton's latest, DARK SHADOWS, are now up on WaterTower's official site.

    http://www.watertower-music.com/release … h=WTM39283

Interesting! Certainly not as colorful and comically cheesy as the marketing campaign for the film suggests, this is more old-fashioned horror. The 'uncut' annotations do seem to suggest not all score was used, or edited for the film.

A bit too old-fashioned horror music for my taste, but I'll postpone final evaluation untill I've heard the whole thing. As an Elfman completist, I need to get this whether I like it or not.

    biggrin

I don't know if I'll get this, will have to see the film first, but the marketing makes the film look like it derails in easy comedy and cheesy retro stylings, rather than what Tim Burton keeps promising in his interviews. Even though Helena Bonham Carter is also stressing that Warners simply doesn't know how to market the film and is thus misrepresenting it, this is another clue the film is not what it seems to be.
