Don't forget is work on Taymor's opera Gendel in 2006.

Anywho, I'd like to take this back further to Final Fantasy... which I pointed out earlier... is probably his last GREAT score. What he has done since and based on Alan's musical preference I can understand why Alan wouldn't be interested in Goldenthal's output since 2001. I don't necessarily think Goldenthal has abandoned his style or sound but is adapting it for what each individual picture needs. Maybe The Tempest doesn't need a huge orchestral sound (mind you Cliff Eidelman's tone poem based on the same play is magnificent) and who knows what Taymor wants. In any case, I'd love to hear more larger scaled score in the vein of Sphere, Final Fantasy and Michael Collins.

  1. For me, a couple of similar-styled scores does suggest a specific path - but one not necessarily dictated by the composer. I do look forward to Goldenthal's next composition.

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree on that one, Alan. I think it's pretty farfetched to suggest a path based on two film scores over the course of 7 years....two films and scores that aren't even remotely similar in style, approach and tone. If there's any path to be suggested at all, it's the lack of film assignments in the period (which I hope will be remedied soon). That's it.

Personally, I just want him to make more film music. I couldn't care less if it's for full orchestra or solo kazoo.
    I am extremely serious.
  3. It's difficult to have much of a discussion here. Maybe I should track you down in the North-East of England later this year to follow up on this interesting discussion!

Listening to the clips for The Tempest and, unfortunately this confirms to me that Goldenthal's gone down a creative pathway that's left me behind - and I don't really want to follow.

As much as i love what he did afterward (except for Frida), i agree with this.

Any info on the Cliff Eidelman tone poem? Where do we get to hear it?

Btw, it's funny but i truly think that if anyone asked Goldenthal right now, he'd tell you he fells at the top of his creativity, really doing what he wants to do now.

Goldenthal's indie-rock driven original score album features vocals by Beth Gibbons (Portishead) and Reeve Carney (Carney, star of SpiderMan: Turn Off The Dark, on Broadway) and musicians Benjamin Curtis (Secret Machines), Page Hamilton (Helmet), Mark Stewart (Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman) as well as the composer himself on keyboards to bring the surreal world of the film alive. Haunting ballads, psychedelic up-tempo instrumentals and orchestral electronica round out this unique listening experience.

    His latest updates:

"We've just passed the 500-"like" mark (half-way to the 1,000 Goldenthal says we need before he'll pay attention to this page;-) so here's the latest: the music video is currently being edited (it's HOT!) and THE TEMPEST CD is in stores and down-loadable next week."

"If any of you fine friends have advice on how to reach more Goldenthal fans in anticipation of the free streaming of the entire album and the music video coming soon RIGHT HERE-- bring it on! (an FB ad is running of course)."

Here's my advice for thge Facebook page: put other music samples up; "The Tempest" is not a shining moment for a nubmer of score lover,s such as myself...

I'll stick to YouTube for discovering other works by him.
