    Aaah, elections today (and the past couple of days) in Europe! You all of course voted for change and the greens.

    But I just read that only 14% of the Cypriot people voted! shocked Demetris!

    The results in The Netherlands are a bit odd too, and I suppose that if you had national elections, it would've been crazy. In Belgium there are national elections as well, on Flemish and Wallon level (which is not really national), and while I hope a little more variation, I guess the Christen-Democrats will reign again. That would be a joke, since they (and the Liberals) haven't been able to organize themselves for the past TWO years.

    I voted; but there's a huge abstinence in Cyprus 'cause of the governments objectionable handlings of matters having to do with our "friends" the Turks and in Greece, where i live now, there's an even bigger abstinence due to the financial mess our country (and obviously the entire European Union) is in. Are you voting?

    The elections in Greece are today. U haven't voted yet but I'll go later on. The situation is exactly as Demetris described it. The percentage of abstinence is going to be huge. Financial mess, lack of new ideas and a general feeling of being fed up with all of them (the political parites I mean) is the answer to why people in Greece choose to go to the beach today and not to vote.

    Btw, the situation here in Greece and Cyprus is all in favor or the big parties, 2 at each time: the governing party that is right wing and the opposition who are socialist; everyone else (left radicals, right radicals, communists and ecologists) come sweating far behind the 2 parties. People are polarized sadly and all the other votes have little impact on the final result.

    I decided to go for a run instead.

    That trip to the EU Parliament in Belgium in school clearly didn't interest me. wink

    Read my post above. The difference between the 2 first parties which are both deep in shit, and the rest of the smaller ones, is vast and cannot be covered. Plus the smaller ones aren't promising either, filled with show-off, incapable politicians or with celebrities-turned-politicians at a blink of an eye at the last moment.

    I'd contribute if i voted in Greece too; but i vote for Cyprus, where the situation is slightly better. All my greek friends including my g/f, and colleagues aren't voting either.

    Actually same here, Catalonia is a bit different than the rest of Spain, but the election campaign has been so nasty and vomit inducing that I won´t vote. Let´s see if they get the message loud and crystal.

    Norway is not part of EU, as you all know (for which I'm thankful), but our general election is held this upcoming autumn. That is customary for most countries, right?

    They are customary as far as I know. In Spain the general elections were last year.

    We had our elections last month out here too. I wasn't able to get my elector ID card made in time but luckily the party I was rooting for (Indian National Congress) came to power. Though not perfect, IMO these people are much better than all the people in the some hundred other parties here combined.

    Well, if despite everything nasty they do, people still all come down and vote them, then that's something to consider too?

    The Flemish elections fall together with the EU elections, and sometimes also our national elections fall together with EU elections.

    Norway has a long tradition - or "national trauma", if you will - of being in an involuntary union with other countries, first Denmark, then Sweden. We really only got full autonomy in 1905, when we were finally separated from Sweden (although we celebrate our independence day from Denmark in 1814 on May 17th each year). As such, we are naturally skeptical towards any external force that meddles in our national policies. On the other hand, we have always been split down the middle on this issue, both in the 1972 and 1994 referendi, the "No" side just BARELY winning each time. So I'm curious to how it would turn out if they held a referendum today. I honestly think the "Yes" side is stronger these days.
