So after the superb Casino Royale and letdown that was Quantum Of Shoelace, I have high hopes for Bond 23.

The first article I've found reports that the story may take place in Afganistan.

    From Empire:

The Guardian reports that unnamed scriptwriters on the unnamed follow up to Quantum of Solace have been seeking technical advice from the British Embassy in Kabul.

That could, possibly mean that the top secret plot might possibly, at some point, possibly take in the drug-funded insurgency in the Helmand Province, which has been occupying thousands of NATO troops since 2006.

Bond went to Afghanistan before, in the 1987 Timothy Dalton starrer The Living Daylights.

Eon Productions aren't talking, so file this under "seriously only a rumour" for now.

I like these new style Bond films, so I'm actually looking forward to a new Bond film for once. And as much as I am an über-fan of Arnold's scores, I do wish the gig would go to someone else for a change to allow Arnold to focus on other projects, but more importantly to 'shake things up' a little as far as the films are concerned. But then of course if they do choose a different composer and he or she is not up to the job (and let's face it, it'll be a he), then I'll soon complain that Arnold wasn't brought on board!

We're a hard bunch to please us score fans. rolleyes

As Arnold has said himself "I did everything I wanted to do with Bond on Tomorrow Never Dies. I didn't think I'd be coming back for more so it's difficult to keep doing more."

Tomorrow Never Dies still remains my favourite Bond score probably because of that.

    John Powell.

I don't see Arnold giving up this cash cow any time soon.

Nope, if I were getting paid that much and kept getting repeatedly invited to the next gig, I wouldn't give up either.

I hope Craig's Bond is allowed to mature for this next one. He needs to become more of the charming, materialistic, cold-hearted, flirting bond we all know. And I really hope this next one can stand on its own as a Bond film. They need a different director. And need to stop with the quick cuts for the action scenes. And allow Arnold to bring the Bond theme out more. At least go full guitar and brass when Bond does something fricken awesome.
  1. place a villian in the movie that is worth calling a villian, not the joke that was the villian in QOS. Man 5 year olds weren't even scared of that twit

If they accomplish that, then it will improve a whole lot

They need to return to the old stylish type of Bond movies. CR had style, but it didn't feel "Bond" enough.

And we need another classic Barry-esque score. CR and QOS have no flavour to them.

Enough with the Powell's and Giacchino's and Arnold's i say, for a while; we've had too much of them and they probably had too much of themselves, they need to re-think and re-invent the envelope a bit. I say give it to Edward Shearmur. I am dying to hear what he'll come up with!
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Shearmur would be interesting, for sure. I think Powell would be the perfect choice - but I have to say, I've really enjoyed Arnold's last two. He started like a kid in a sweet shop, then I thought he'd lost it with Die Another Day, but then he's shown an impressive level of maturity and craftsmanship in his last two.

As for the film... I'm not sure I'll be putting too much faith in British press stories about it just yet. They'll be making up stories about who's singing the title song before too long, I guess.

I want to give it someone who hasn't done the orchestral/techno Bond inspired score before. Powell has done it (Agent Cody Banks, Payhcheck), Shearmur has done it (Johnny English), Giacchino has done it (Alias), etc, etc. I want to give it to someone who wants to bring something fresh to the table while at the same time keeping John Barry in the back of his or her mind. Elliot Goldenthal would be a daring choice. Marco Beltrami. Danny Elfman. Joel Goldsmith. James Newton Howard.

Hey, I had never thought of Beltrami doing a Bond score. It sounds really, really good.

Nooooooooo. It would be all dry and violent. I can't see it having that suave-stylish feel to it.

How about Jane Antonia Cornish? Or, dare I say it, James Hannigan?

No, but I agree. There's something about Bond that should make it exclusively British.

Indeed. And I'm glad no one has mentioned John Williams yet.

It would be interesting to hear a Barry spin-off from him, but not an actual Bond score.

The thing that bothers me about Powell scoring Bond is what will he deliver that separates his Bond score from the other Bondish material he has already written or from what Arnold has already borught to the table stylistically.

And to be honest, it would run the risk of just sounding like Bourne. And that would be disastrous!!

  2. Rahman should do a Bond score. Having seen LAGAAN a few weeks back, I think he would be great for it. (And no, the music is nothing like SLUMDOG or his contributions to ELIZABETH: GOLDEN AGE.)

And stepping away from the whole British thing, how about:

    Bear McCreary
    James Newton-Howard
    Alexandre Desplat (a tough one)
    Chris Young
    Don Davis

    (and back to British...)

Clint Mansell (although he'd probably hate doing it and it would end up sounding like Arnold anyway)
Julian Nott (I want to hear more from Nott anyway, he's bloody good when he gets a chance to write)
