Apparently he thinks Bond is just a dense brat.

Maybe, but then maybe other film score fans thought it was silly that DP was doing Tron before we actually heard the score...

I just watched the first "new' Bond. Got bored and let-down and never re-watched the sequel, or plan to do so for the rest of the same-spirited installments in the franchise.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Casino Royale immediately became one of my top 10 movies, but Quantum Of Shoelace kinda sucked in comparison.
  1. Casino Royale is a great film, a very serious Bond film as well, and that may be off-putting for some. The casino scenes remain fantastic and Daniel Craig plays it uber-cool!

And Quantum of Shoelace ( biggrin ), well yeah, a bit weak in every aspect really. A shame because I thought a real Bond sequel would be a tremendous idea.

Daniel Craig, a fine actor but he ISN'T Bond, he looks more like a northern English coal miner or a bricklayer than a sophisticated secret agent.

The Bond films have been shit for a long time, Casino Royale was alright'ish but without the music it could have been any number of modern thrillers, I wouldn't want them to return to the camp of Roger Moore but I would like to see a return of megalomaniac super villians and memorable henchmen.

  2. You know, I haven't seen a single Bond-film prior to The Living Daylights, so I've only Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan to compare with. I liked Brosnan a lot though and the first two starring him (Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies) I still watch on a regular basis because they have that fun element.

    indeed

good to see Daniel Craig back though

  4. Calling it "Bond 23" reminds me of the film that had the poster onscreen highlighting a very high numbered Rocky remake.

It's interesting, coz I feel the complete opposite. I like the way JB has been heading in the Craig films. More realistic, less "campy", less black/white. More like the BOURNE films.

Then again, it may have something to do with the fact that I didn't grow up with these films, and only saw them in adult age (and - with a few exceptions - didn't like them very much when I did).
    I am extremely serious.

Only 4 years left to make 15 Jaws flicks. Spielberg and Williams had better get busy now.

  7. I really did like CASINO ROYALE. Fine film. Perhaps a tad too much 'now it all begins' again in the spirit of BATMAN BEGINS, but they do it pretty well.

QUANTUM OF SOLACE, on the other hand... yikes, I hope that's the last time a pseudo-arthouse director gets hold of the franchise. Production value buried in frantic close-ups that could have been shot anywhere for a 10th of the budget it took to capture them. Paul Greengrass's team knows what they're doing - whoever was making this film was trying to figure out what that was, and fell on their face.

Too bad. Old Bond is real Bond, pure gold.

Bond was always about grace, utter charm, class and elegance.

Now he's a witty cruel dark bastard; too many of those characters around, Bond SHOULD never change, he should always be something entirely different otherwise he's not differentiated by the rest of the bunch.

PLUS, he looks like Vladimir friggin Putin. That's terribly offPUTINg.

  8. I think when he fell out of a plane a kilometre above the ground or something and landed with a beautiful girl without a parachute and nary a scratch, all that *realism* which the BOURNE look tries to build just evaporated for me.

Doesn't really matter to me, as I wasn't a big Bond fan in the first place. But I guess I can sympathize with those who grew up with a certain version of the character.

  9. I must admit Craig is my favourite incarnation of the character, which probably says I don't really like the character and his history as much as a real fan.
