Having your privacy invaded -celebrity or not- is not a funny thing in and of itself, but I suppose it's funny from a satirical and societal perspective (I realise noticing this takes the fun out of it). But I imagine that's not why you find it funny. I could be wrong.

Given that he posted a link to the actual photos rather than an article about it suggests otherwise. That's what I find curious. Did I look at some of the photos? Sure, I'm not taking any moral high ground here. Do I find it funny? Not really.
  2. I did refuse to see them.

It's odd how that seems to be a respectable position to take, but as soon as you swap 'skinny' for 'fat' it suddenly becomes unacceptable. I'm going to take the moral high ground on this one and say I like all shapes and sizes!

As long as they're not ugly.

Well, the view was nice while it lasted.

I will never raise an objection to having the opportunity to see a beautiful naked woman. But I do think the "if they don't want people to see them, they shouldn't take them" argument (which fortunately nobody has used here) is completely asinine. "If he didn't want someone to steal his car, why did he leave it on the road?" etc.

As I said on Facebook, I struggle to see what's special about it. It works well enough in the film, but so do a lot of things. As far as I can tell it doesn't really have any distinguishing features other than having been (co-)written by someone famous for something other than film music.

If you're a celeb and you know that everyone on earth wants to see you naked, then you don't store your photos of you naked and with dicks in your mouth and sync them with the web for backup. You take them offline and enjoy privately. As i said, no pity for foolishness.

James didn't say that. James causterized the 'they shouldn't have taken them at all' argument. I said take them and enjoy them offline but never have them online in any machine that goes on the internet and esp. if it actually backups them online. Re-read what he and I wrote.

    I'm with D. (up to a point).

It doesn't just go for celebs, it goes for ANYONE doing naked webcamming, erotic selfies, home made porn in general.
Unless you have been living under a rock for the last two decades or so, you may have noticed privacy isnt the same thing it was twenty years ago. You don't get to hide. You don't get to go "off the grid".
Sure, sure, there are a great many (sometimes very good) moral and sociological points to make against that, but it's the reality of today. And the only remedy is to not be an idiot.
    It's that simple.

Feel the unrepressable urge to make an erotic home movie? Make sure it's stored LOCALLY and DELETE IT afterwards (better still: don't do it! At all! With a minimum of effort I can get any deleted file back unless you have used tripple CIA-strength shredding techniques. And I am not a pro.).
Upload it to the cloud? You're an idiot.

Note: to be very, VERY clear: it doesn't make you a villain (the hacker/publisher is).

    But it was exceedingly preventable.

To borrow James' analaogy and build on it: Sure, you have paid for that Ferrari. It's yours by law and morals. ANd you have every right to do whatever you want with it.

But to park it in downtown Detroit, unlocked, while you know you've been followed around by several dozen youth gangs...well, what did you think was gonna happen?

Bottom line, again, because it's so important: don't be stupid. Use common sense. Stay safe.
This sort of shit IS preventable.
    Nothing asinine about that.

That's a good point. I agree some caution on their part certainly would have been a sensible option, but at the same time they were assured their data was safe in Lando Calrissian's Cloud City. So perhaps the problem was more a lack of vigilance on their part than any conscious decision to take a risk.

D seems to be suggesting this invasion of privacy is itself funny (because clearly all celebrities deserve to be ridiculed and embarrassed like this) which is what I find peculiar. It seems sadistic. Sure, the best humour generally comes from much darker places, and I'm all for non-PC humour - but there's a difference between laughing at something and laughing with something.

Anyway. I'm merely noticing, not trying to take a moral stance (a point D has clearly missed, try as I might). I couldn't care less about these celebrities and their embarrassment. Boobs ftw and all that.

...But I would have to slightly object to this, mostly because it feels a little repressive. Why shouldn't people, if they feel the urge, make and keep 'erotic' movies and take nude pictures? What's wrong with that? We're human. We like sex. We like weird sex. (Even if we don't admit it.)

Yeah, uploading to an external source is probably not a good idea, but people generally don't do these things because they feel it's reasonable. They do it because it excites them. I think that's at least worth bearing in mind before we completely condemn them for making arguably bad decisions like this.

I agree it's not funny at all (if anything, as you probably got from my post, I find it angrily annoying).

Seems to me though that D. departs from much the same point as I do, although with a different slant: I am annoyed at them (the celebs), being in the public eye and still throwing all sensible caution to the wind. D. finds them silly, on the same grounds. But I don't want to put words in anyone's mouth, and I can see how his post could be read differently, yeah.

Oh, I couldn't agree more! It is insanely restrictive. And not just a little bit disturbing.
But as I said, I am not arguing morality here.

It's a different world out there from twenty years back.
For all the truly marvellous things that a fully connected world has brought us (case in point: us talking! smile ), there is a dark and seedy underbelly like websites that thrive on 'revenge porn' (that that us even a phrase now is disturbing as hell). Couple that with storage media that leaks like a sieve and untethered access to online media for certain security channels, and I -and I consider myself a generally sensible person- would certainly take a minute to think about certain risks.

    Nothing paranoid.
Just in the same way as I'd think about closing the downstairs windows when going out. Locking my door. Not carrying my wallet in my back pocket. Ordinary, precautionary stuff that we've long since gotten used to.

I do not condemn anyone for falling prey to a predator.
But I do berate them for not being more careful. Uploading phone porn to the cloud was incredibly careless and naive.

As I said, I had no idea about him as a person until I saw this video, so I had no reason to assume anything. He could very well be perfectly nice most of the time, as most people generally are, but he's displayed a shocking amount of ignorance and arrogance in this video. It's infuriating when so-called liberals make noises like he does, all in the name of misplaced political correctness.
