Never heard them. I was just curious as to what they actually sound like? (I think I wrongly assume that any score that Michael plays which I haven't heard or heard of -which is invariably most of the time- contains vast swaths of moody strings!)

The track 'Cry' is one of the few times I've heard a classical male vocalist used well in a film score. It's an incredibly powerful sound, remarkably underused.

Great, great trilogy, both film and music wise. First thing I did after watching the movies was to order the pack with the three scores.

    Ah, okay.
Um, no not really. Well, not scores that are based around 'moody strings', not usually anyway.

    Star Trek Michael Giacchino

Oddly enough, I think the fact that it's a Star Trek score works both for and against it. Against it because Trek fans such as myself tend to have a very specific sound they like to hear in a Trek score (which this didn't achieve); for it because otherwise I might not have given it as much attention as I have, of which I'm glad I did.

But I've had such an odd yet ultimately positive experience with this one. I was a little disappointed when I first heard it, the theme felt too weak, then I was even more disappointed when I heard it in the [highly overrated but enjoyable] movie. Yet I kept returning to it. And returning to it. And returning to it - and now it's probably my favourite score of 2009 thus far!? That damn theme/motif/notes-that-come-together-to-represent-something-somewhere-from-the-2009-re-envisioning-of-Star Trek is SO catchy!

I don't think this will be remembered as the better Ice Age score, but on the whole it's an improvement over the first.

The main theme from the first movie rarely pops up and it's probably a good thing as it would get annoying. Sid's, Ellie's and the Mammoth theme have have all made appearances, and the new theme for Buck fits in nicely.

Also, and I have no problem with it, it's all mickey mousing.

And don't look at your media player while listening to it and all the 15 second tracks merge into one. smile

Edit: "Battles" is a fantastic action track.

I on the other hand adore Powell's mickey mousing. I'm looking forward to what is hopefully a nice cheerful score!
  2. The Matrix: Deluxe Edition (Don Davis)

Second listen. This is a masterpiece of dissonance. You gotta love the relentless energy and bold fresh sound that Davis went with. It took me some time to appreciate the harshness and inaccessibility of the music but there are some awe-inspiring cues here. I can imagine myself totally adoring it after repeated listens. Great stuff!

Holy shit, Anthony likes a Powell score, like instantly.

    RAVENOUS | nyman and albarn

Extraordinary score! I love the theme from the End Title (also in Boyd's Journey for example), with it's really "putting you off" moment in the beginning (it's like "what the hell is this?"). Then there's fun tracks like Let's Go Kill that Bastard or The Pit (I love that one).

Puts a smile on the face now and then!
