  1. Quite a prolific composer of whom I have no experience.

Can anyone recommend some titles to sample?

Diva is a must have. It has some perfect solo pianos, unusual combinations of ethnic instruments, great percussion, fantastisch thematic material.

Be sure to get the 51 minutes release and not the 35 minute. It's not the 35 release isn't good or anything, but more music is better in this case.

So once you've had this, just try out different works. I can't say I know an awful lot; maybe 15 scores in total. I'll check tomorrow. So I'm not the first person to go to, but if you'd like an opinion on another specific score just ask me and perhaps I can tell you a bit more...

Listening to audio clips for Diva makes me want to run a mile! I can't imagine sitting through all the clips never mind whole tracks!!

But thanks for drawing my attention to this one. Would you say Diva is characteristic of Cosma's work?

  3. I notice that Cosma scored Kidnapped, a 1970's TV series that Tim may remember? I recognise the theme.

  4. I remember the Les Notes de L'ecran series from the now deceased Cinefonia Records being very good, particularly vol 2:

I thought I did a review of Vol 2 (which was the better of the two Cinefonia albums), but I guess not.

I have volume two, which I bought shortly after seeing the remarkable "Diva" in the cinema, but really can't stand any of it? Maybe I need to hear it again.
  5. Volume 2 has a very neoclassical epic score on its first half, and a more breezy romantic comedy score for its second half.

L'As des As and Jaguar are truly great! But I recommend to get some compilation CD of his best themes (there are many) and afterwards you can decide which scores you like. At least this was what I did. The man composed many wonderful themes, that's for sure!

I only know The Jaguar, introduced to it by Tintin. What a strong and memorable main theme!

I heard through some of it again today. The melodies are delightful and very sweet, and the orchestrations are colourful and very broadwayish. But there is virtually no variation, and it plays like little more than a medley of showtunes that soon lose their impact due to the insane amount of reiteration. But I guess I can see how some people might treasure that...

DIVA is probably his most famous score, but I've always had a soft spot for his LES MONDES ENGLOUTIS, the 1980's animated sci fi series nicknamed "Shagma" here in Norway. This was shown on morning TV when I was a kid, so I obviously have a very strong nostalgic relationship to it (especially the songs!). But when I got the soundtrack a few years ago, I found out that it has many nice score cues too, and nice orchestral/instrumental renditions of the main title song.

    Here's that opening song, btw:

    I am extremely serious.

It's been a while since I've heard it, but your remark about repetitiveness rings true. It reminded me more of Max Steiner than Broadway though. wink

There is a new release, which seems fantastic! 17 disc, 40 scores, some of them long out of print!

And others with previously unreleased tracks included.

I've recently wondered about Cosma's work, looking for some sort of a compilation album to get. But with this boxed set being available as a download for £16 it's too good a deal to pass up on. It's taking a while to download but I've got my weekend sorted as far as listening goes!

I'll be very interested to hear your comments on this one Alan, I've very limited experience of Cosma and only own one score of his, Diva.

It's going to take a time to digest it all! Comments will be forthcoming - but I've still to make a comment on Live and Let Die (which you asked about several weeks ago!) shame

I bought this one a few weeks ago - and love that theme. This soundtrack is included in this Cosma set but being 1 title in around 40 I don't mind having to again.

I plan to buy the CD set. It's not that expensive either, considering it's 17 CDs and I only own about 2-3 of them, plus some themes on a double CD compilation.

The CD set is definitely not too expensive. I'd be interested to know what language the 150-page booklet that comes with the CD set is.

I'm not sure where I would have put the CD set if I had gone down that route.

Alan, I assumed that the booklet would be in french and just did a research.

The booklet is available as a PDF file online here:

I got the info from here:

This CD set is really cheap considering that there are 40 scores. shocked

    I think I wrote that, didn't I?

Yup, my memory was right! I remember I liked it quite a lot, at least the first of the two scores on the disc. I think I need to go find it in the shelf and give it a listen. Must be years since last time. One of the better things that came out of my quite short time as a reviewer on FMOTW. smile
