What exactly makes the third so terrible?

Bad script, bad music, pointless excuse for another mummy story, horribly cast, bad use of visual effects... you name it.

Perhaps the second one, I'll give you that, but the first one certainly does not have a bad script, horrible casting and bad use of visual effects in the LEAST. Add that to one of Goldsmith's finest scores, and you have a damn good film.

Unfortunately, everything that followed has given The Mummy franchise a bad name. They should have just left it at the acclaimed first outing (even if it meant being robbed of one Silvestri's finest action/adventure themes).

No, seriously, i admit the first one was MUCH fun. EXCELLENT pop-corn cinema kinda flick. But the 2nd one is immensely forgettable.

The Curios Case of Benjamin BUtton

    Mmmm.....What a missed oportunity.

The movie starts to work after 1 hour and half, when the love story really beggins.

What really annoys me is, you never see the complexity of a Young man in the body of a old man. Bradd Pitt monochromatic performance and David Fincher cold direction are uncapable of give deep to his main character.

Except for the final 20 minuts of the movie, the whole story could be from the point of view of a normal guy.

    I disagree completely!
The movie works since minute one like a clockwork, never being too overdramatic nor crying inducing (that goes for the last part of the movie). Fincher´s direction is PERFECT, changing the tone of his previous films but with his style in every single moment of the film. And at the ending is simply sublime in all aspects.
As for Brad Pitt, well, I´ve always had the same problem with him: a moment a think he is a good (even a really good) actor, and the minute later I think he is performing like a robot.

As for Desplat´s score, I´v got to say it´s really good, shining in the appropriate moments and providing overall a great score to the visuals. As with the direction, never over the top or overdramatic.

Actually, I felt there were a few storytelling decisions that were missed opportunities myself.

The current approach of watching Benjamin's life float by in music-and-voiceover driven montages suits a performance of the calibre Pitt gives, but if they'd wanted to suggest something of the (mostly unshown) inner life of Button, they needed a much stronger performer at the centre.

It does feel like for 3 hours of time that there should have been more of that inner life. To me, not enough was added by having Daisy's character reflect from the perspective 2005 that demanded devoting so much screentime to that story strand. I would have stripped away the 2005 hospital room sequence, told the story either linearly or from the perspective of Benjamin as a (mentally) old man in a young boy's body, and found another way to motivate the narration (which is too much the easy kind of narration at the moment - narrative summary) and show the ultimate fate of the clock.

Also, for a film with this one's epic scale and budget, there should have been one major ballet setpiece with Daisy before a Parisian crowd at the height of her fame.

One directorial touch I thought was a bit much: the sound of crows as Benjamin and Daisy search the house in the lead-up to the reveal of **** the death of a character. ****** A bit on the nose for me. I knew what was coming the moment I heard the first crow.

    Eden Lake

One of those films americans simply can´t do (they try and try, but the most they can deliver is crap like Hostel). In the vein of "Wolf Creek" or "Frontiere(s)", "Eden Lake" is a british tale of survival in an unknown territory. The tension from minute one is great, the acting is really good (specially disturbing is the leader of the young guys) and the ending is simply devastating. Highly recommended.

Oh, and why do I love so much a girl with british accent? lick

^ I've been wanting to see that, but never actually got to do so. Thanks for the review but please, tell me something know; is it a torture porn kind of flick? 'Cause i absolutely hate those and definitely don't want to watch something like that, the thought that it might actually be such, is what kept me away from it.

    THE EDGE OF LOVE

A Greatly passionate and realistic tale of growing up, loosing your childhood innocence, maturing and facing life portrayed through the world war II England and Wales. Amazing photography and strong acting make that a very well-shot and paced movie about life i whole-heartedly agree. In many ways it reminded me of Atonement, only THE EDGE OF LOVE was dressed in a way more romantic veil of nostalgia and sprinkled the odor of past eras.

The music of Badalamenti finds him at his most mature and down to earth mode to date, deeply romantic and emotional.

    Recommended.

I saw that programme the other night - and it was really interesting. Some great footage of the sharks breaching the surface in their attempt to catch seals (although I thought that they were sea lions rather than seals.)

Some gruesome scenes to be honest, but IMO are totally justified (for the purposes of the film). I mean, it´s not like Hostel (or Saw, etc), where the only goal is to watch the torture of the characters. It´s what the film requires and it never goes too far. You really care about the characters, so no need to go over the top.

Pitt like it or not is the reason a lot of people saw the film in the first place. A good example of the reverse aging process was told in the story. At 21 he enrolled at Harvard and was a success on the football field as well as his school workload. By the time he was a senior at 17 he couldn't play football and not keep up with his school work. On paper it works well but I don't think it would on the screen.

Slumdog Millionaire was a good film with a lousy soundtrack in my opinion. That pounding rhythm loosened more wax in my ears. I needed two q-tips to clean them out when I got home cheesy The film however was well told about growing up in India. A bit on the graphic side which I think is not necessary.

  3. Probably later than most people here I eventually got around to watching Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

I did see it on my flight back from Malta earlier in the year as it was the movie playing on the overhead screens. But I only saw bits and pieces - and I didn't fork out the £4.00 for the crappy headphones so I didn't even hear any dialogue.

Seeing it in the comfort of my own home didn't really improve the experience much. I thought that it was a pretty poor effort; for me, the poorest of the 4 movies. For large periods of time it didn't feel like an Indiana Jones movie: there was plenty going on but it just didn't seem to have the youthful essence that the previous 3 films had. And all the fight scenes just went on and on and on.

One of the comments my other (better?) half mentioned was that she could take the subject matter of E.T.s just as much as the Ark of the Covenant, etc but when it came to the "supernatural" episodes with the monkeys and ants...well, that was just daft.

Luckily I only paid £20 for this and the other Indy 3 movies.

  4. I was also flicking through the channels last night and came across The Prophecy (starring Christopher Walken). It looked "interesting" and so didn't dwell on the movie as I had joined it partway through.

Is this worth catching from the beginning?

I can barely remember it? Walken is some kind of avenging angel ( the supernatural kind ) in a direct to DVD release, I vaguely remember enjoying it for what it was.

The best thing about it is Walken as the avenging angel sitting on a wire fence in the exact same way ravens do. A very disconcerting visual effect.
And about the only interesting thing about the film.

THE MAKING OF INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL.

    I was amazed. really amazed.

I thought a lot of things was CGI and they was real!!!!

The Area 51 doors, the truck collisioning with the boxes, the snake from the "snake pit" scene, the hat in the Antz scene, a lot of the jungle chase scene.... They are all real!!! why Kaminsly did with the cinomatography to make this real things looks like CGI!

Anyway, I was surprised because Ford did a lot, and I mean A LOT of his stunts.

About the movie??? You know, It's always a very entertaining movie. And there are two movies here : a really, really good one. And a really , really bad one. But It's indiana Jones in the times of Pirates of Carribeean generation. wink

    My Top Indy Movies:
    1-The Last Crusade
    2-Raider of the lost Ark
    3-Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
4-Temple of the Doom ( The final 40 minuts of sublime action, can't solve the annoying parts with "willie" )

I finally saw BURN AFTER READING. When your usual movie friend is on a world trip, it's harder to see a good movie. Anyway, this Coen film was again a joy to watch. Laughed myself on the floor during some scenes, and especially the last one was hilarious, and a joy to see. Some characters just keep doing stupid things, but somehow the direction made it look like valid actions. Malkovitch was excellent as the frustrated guy who tried to "hunt" for morons and Pitt, while spastic, was convincing. I thought the CIA guys in Langley took he best scenes though.

And I have been introduced to the coolest word since some time: a CLUSTERFUCK. biggrin biggrin biggrin

    Iron Man

First viewing! Enjoyable. Maybe not as great as everyone had made it out to be, and I wish I'd saved a bit of cash and bought the DVD instead of Blu-Ray, but it was still good fun. The flying sequence over LA was awesome, and Downey Jr.'s performance made it. Plus Gwyneth Paltrow looked really cute!

What a lame excuse for a score the movie had though. RC - you've outdone yourself on the trash you churn out! I wish Debney was left on that project.

I don't know the comics at all, but does that Samuel L Jackson cameo after the credits have relevance? A set up for a sequel?
