NP: STRING QUARTET NO. 1....BENJAMIN LEES. A nice refreshing change in a piece written in 1952 i.e. it sounds like it was written much earlier.

My second go around on the Lee piece and I am beginning to understand and like it.

    Candide (overture) - Leonard Bernstein

Delightful recording by Bernstein and the NY philharmonic, from a disc devoted entirely to the maestro's music. The tempo is impressively quick, the fastest I've heard of this piece. My favourite part must be when the second theme returns, with the light violin triplets engaging in dazzling counterpoint to the more grounded lyrical theme, provided here in the coupling of a solo horn and oboe. One of Bernstein's masterpieces!

NP: THE PLANETS....GUSTAV HOLSTThis is a recording featuring Geoffry Simon conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. In spite of the bashing of this work I love to listen to all 7 movements.

Who bashes it? Critics and no-marks who are jealous of it's popularity and brilliance.

I was half-joking about the attitude of some of the board members of MT who thought it was over-rated.

JP: Judge Dredd - Dredd Or Alive
After having listened to and enjoyed Big Finish' audio dramas about Doctor Who (starring four official doctors!) and the generally excellent Sapphire & Steel audio series (starring a very dapper David Warner as Steel), I thought I'd sample this Big Finish Productions audio drama, based on the cult comic strip.
There's a whole series, but not being more than cursorily familiar with the character, I just wanted to try the first one to see if it was any good. And in fact it's quite entertaining, with no previous knowledge of deeper insight into the world of 2000AD required.

The pacing is excellent, the direction flawless and the sound design spot on (and very spectacular).
The voice acting is generally good, with Toby Longworth doing a very menacing, growling Dredd.
The story is OK, though rather linear.
Looking forward to the rest of the stories.

    Wrong thread.
  1. DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH - V SYMPHONY (Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andre Previn)

One of my favorite classical works, very influential in film music - James Horner's suspense music is heavily based on it, Shostakovich is an important reference for his Enemy at the Gates score. A part of the beautiful Largo part was rewritten in his scores for Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger.

A theme from the final part was partly reused for his Achilles theme in Troy. Anyway it is an amazing piece, I love his knack for dissonance, pure beauty.

It's never too late to start listening again.

I would go stir crazy if my musical diet only consisted of film music, I need classical, rock, pop, jazz etc etc.
  5. Of course and since I made an important decision about my future recently (next year I am applying to film school, I've been fooling myself too long not to apply and finding too many excuses not to, basically), I will need to expand my knowledge about classical and other genres A LOT.
