NP : ECCE COR MEUM - Paul McCartney

    A classical work by Paul McCartney? At £2 I couldn't go wrong....could I?

I'm pleased to say that this work won me over, a very spiritual, choral work that's very melodic, I'm glad I bought this and this'll get more plays in the weeks to come.

Really? It's very rare that rock/pop artists are able to compose satisfying orchestral works (unless they also happen to have that background, like Johnny Greenwood).

McCartney also did Liverpool Oratorio back in the early 90's ( with help from Carl Davis who he gave full credit to ) but I've never heard it. After hearing Ecce Cor Meum ( Behold My Heart ) I want to hear it, I was impressed.
  1. Wasn't there a controversy about the Oratorio? I've heard that Davis wanted more credit than he eventually did (he orchestrated McCartney's material as well as composed the orchestral bridges between it)

A CD called Drumbeat which has selections from the John Barry 7. I remember Duane Eddy playing Rebel Rouser and Barry does a good job on this one.

A first time experience with a new work from Carson Cooman called Nantucket Dreaming. At 26 he is very young for such a mature work.

Berkshire is offering on a closeout BR146706 the Chandos recording of Holst/The Planets plus two suites for only $4.00. If you don't have The Planets this is a reasonable way.

Relating to your question about RVW's Antarctica, Tom, what would you describe Gershwin's work as, pop? classical? jazz? Maybe all of those?

Rhapsody in Blue premiered with the Paul Whiteman Band known more for 'light' music. It was arranged by Ferde "Grand Canyon Suite" Grofe. It did not fit the mold of popular of the day and jazz had not taken a foothold to speak of in US music. I would really define it as a classical piece given the difficulty of playing it. It would have been interesting if the Boston Symphony had premiered the work. I wonder how different the outcome would have been on the piece.

I'm a bit worn out on orchestral music and am needing my music fix from other areas...

NP : SWEET DREAMS - Roy Buchanan

Man o man but Roy kicks serious, and I mean SERIOUS ass on guitar, regarded by his esteemed peers as one of the greats but not so well known with joe public.

Here's his live version of Henry Mancini's PETER GUNN THEME, it's very different from the studio version he did which was more like the Duane Eddy version but this does show his amazing virtuosity with the guitar.
