This statement with your signature underneath, which just happens to be a quote of mine, makes a strange combination I think. dizzy

I usually rip and store my cds in different places. Mostly external hard disks and usbs. And I think that there's a hint of truth in the fact that the more you play a cd the more possibilities it has to lose a bit of its quality.

PS. Oh yeah! I'm back for a few hours! smile

But only by scratching the surface. Or using lower quality discs. I don't think by simple spinning the disc, the quality will diminish, after all it's digital. No reason the content on the disc should ever deteriorate. But the quality of the disc itself is another matter.

Haha, no. But practically all my music is on my pc, so it is true that most of my cds are never used more than a couple of times. It just beats downloading because... well.. you own them. biggrin

The encoding is digital, but the medium it is stored on, on the CD/CD-R, is vulnerable. The heat from an optical laser or faster spnning CD-ROM drive (ever felt a really hot CD after playing in the computer, or a long time in a car player?) could -- COULD -- over time wear away the medium or the stability of the encoding. But I don't anybody will know for sure until we have lost the master tapes and CDs for a film score to time and all we can do is shrug our shoulders saying, "Well, fu(k".

Make that WILL. I read a study not two weeks ago that mentioned that 10% of CD-R media contains reading errors after 3 years! Hard disks (non-permanently connected, obviously) are definitely the cheapest way of permanently storing/backing-up data nowadays. I was looking at prices yesterday, and found I can get a 1.5 TB disk (low speed, though) for merely €99. shocked

Time will tell on all of this material. Beta tapes and commodore floppy disks are difficult to watch or access.
