I know. I was (and I can barely believe I'm typing this) agreeing with you.
  1. Everyone actually is agreeing with each other, I believe. This is the very absence of drama.

I have long dreamed of the stuff I'd include in a film music concert if I got to choose, and (for purely selfish reasons) there would certainly be Alex North in there. What I wouldn't give to hear those opening two cues from The Agony and the Ectasy in concert...

I would too Erik but I just can't afford such luxeries at the moment.
  2. Had to smile on Erik's post. biggrin
  3. I'd really like to get Spartacus as well, but it's a bit of a luxury at the moment for me also. I keep reminding myself that I don't actually listen to what I do have from this score much anyway. Would I listen to it any more often if I had more of the music? Probably not!

  5. Does anyone know whether the super-duper Spartacus release is going to be available to buy through Amazon? I fear the answer will be "no". I got a £140 Amazon gift voucher from my work yesterday and it would be ideal to use this towards Spartacus.

Perhaps SAE will put this up on Amazon.
  6. I'm on the verge of pressing Buy on Varese's Spartacus but would love some feedback from those who have it. Is it worth the money, how is the DVD, complete score sound quality and how are the Love Theme variations discs (As exciting to me as the score itself, but I seem to be alone on that from what I've read!)? Honestly I think I'll end up mostly just listening to disc 1 and the love theme discs!
  7. I can't find the post, but a few days ago at FSM, someone posted something like this about the DVD:

It looked anbd sounded like it was 192 bitrate, picture qaulity wasn't that great, and the aspect ratio was assbackwards to today's, or even ten years ago, is standards.

  8. If you're talking about the Spartacus DVD, Justin, I found it to be quite acceptable. Just a long set of pieces to camera, composers talking about their recollections of the score and North. I can't see how bitrate and aspect ratio could make much of a difference for a whole load of interviews where no music is featured.

But then, I'm not one of those people who would watch an interview on TV with top-of-the-range speakers and a TV the size of a building. Seems like the person you recollect may have this system where "deficiencies" may matter.

I'd certainly recommend it if you can afford it. It's certainly a lovingly put together package that's an "event" in film music releases.

I do think that the listening experience of the complete mono presentation of the score suffers to any comparison of the tracks found in the stereo CD1. It's certainly a bit muddier sounding on CDs 2 & 3, but there's so much excellent material that's on the complete score that I may find myself listening to the mono version so that there's not such a jarring difference between the tracks if I want to mix-and-match tracks.

I'm not sure I'll ever know the score well enough to really appreciate the differences found on the alternates CD (CD4). And I'm finding that I'm cherry-picking CDs 5 and 6 for favourite renditions of the love theme. All the different versions are certainly worth hearing to hear how each artist interprets North's theme.

And I've already mentioned the DVD. I've watched it through only the once and what stands out for me is everyone's admiration for North's work and it's interesting to hear how the work has influenced each of the contributing composers. Desplat's contributions to the disc are certainly the highlight of the set for me: I enjoy seeing how articulate he is and how much of a film music fan he is.

  10. Many thanks for the detailed recommendation, most appreciated. And it's pushed me over the edge, I just ordered it! I know it's extravagant but sometimes you just have to treat yourself!

I hope you enjoy it John cool

I'd love to have gone for this too, the score to Spartacus being one of my favourites but I've had to spend out so much on necessities the last month or two ( clothes, bills etc ) plus the odd affordable CD release that I just couldn't justify it.
  11. I ordered it today too! Must be something in the air today.
