  2. Alan is not the only one. Already Aristotle stated that ..., ah, well, we all know that.

Being a teacher this is of course a constant topic in my client oriented communication.
I get very little cynism. That is due to the fact that I work at a "Gymnasium" (no special focus on sports), comparable to a grammar school in Britain. My students will (hopefully) make a degree wich entitles them to enter university. Would I work at a secundary school, cynism would surely prevail more. At the moment economy in Germany is very bright and companies are actively looking for trainees. So that also helps.
About 50% of my students are sure what profession they whant to take when they have one year left at school. Another 20% is set about the general direction. About 15% will serve a voluntary social year. The rest hasn't yet come to the conclusion that school will in fact one day end.
What I realize is that neoliberal merits have lost their influence almost altogether. "I intend to earn enough money so that I can provide for my family decently. I don't intend to get rich." "Competition is good but the capacity for teamwork is every bit as important if not more so." "Money is a means, not an end." "I don't care about status." Such are typical statements that I hear from my students.
This has partly to do with what these kids witness in their parent's generation. It also has to do with a general current of opinion in Germany. And some of it is school-student romantic idealism that will wear off once they enter university.

Why do kids today show such apathy towards their future? They don't seem to realise that they need to put the work in so that they can get to where they want to go.

I feel a bit better now!

Sounds like something that has to do with age indeed.
Do they know what they want? Can they really know what they want already? Most people find that out much later on... after the first chances to go to college have passed...

Also, in school things often aren't fun because they have to. Later on when it is out of true interest and motivation it will get better.

But it can be very frustrating because we look back from our point of view with all our experience and we think we know better but they think they know best too, of course.
  5. There's a lot of wise words here Bregje! I know that our two kids are no different from most others in that, at the moment, doing much of anything is the last thing on their minds. It does seem weird that children are expected to make important decisions and take important exams just when their hormones are being tossed about in one big biochemical maelstrom.

But I see the potential that they have shown being whittled away and them both doing just enough to get by (or worse) in school. When they are not being forced to go to school we never see them except at mealtimes (we still insist that we sit down to an evening meal together). They are both hidden away in their rooms.

I do think that I may have too high an expectation and can't understand their attitudes (I was probably the odd one when I was their age: preferring to do my homework or revision above most other things rather than socialise or watch TV).

I know this is nothing compared to some of the above but I'm sick. Cramps, many toilet visits, headache, not hungry, ... Long time ago I felt like this. I was at work and just had to go back and sleep the whole day. And tonight I had to cancel attending the première of a friends movie in Bruges. Damn! Some calm days ahead. sad

I cannot even BEGIN to start quantifying the planet-consuming fire of my hatred of touchscreen telephones.

After the loss of my deeply lameted and very deeply missed Nokia E71, I thought I was just being a technophobe and needed some time to get used to this Fantastic Brand New Communication Device For A New Era with 34 billion colours Super-XOLED screen and access to a zillion apps!

The f*cking thing loses roughly half its charge when I just LOOK at it.
I am unable to type any text that doesn't come out as very close to lower-Sumerian incantations (and the touchscreen keyboard actually has BIGGER keys than my old Nokia's physical ones).
Oh, and I especially love that I am unable to get pretty much anything working offline, because the default for pretty much any application is a continuous connection to the internet, which is just bleeding FANTASTIC when you're abroad and need to consult a map application. Even the ones that suggest they can be used offline need to go online to check if they're able to wrok offline. Whoops! There goes another 70 Euros...but hey, at least I found out I'm about 20 meters from the nearest ice cream parlour in Kuala Lumpur, which is a bit of a shame as I am in Belgium (getting a location without fairly continuous internet connection often leads to a rough error margin of about 4500 miles).

    I HATE this phone.
    I HATE it.

    I hear ya, Martijn.

I still have an old Nokia phone from the mid 2000s (not a touch screen), and of course I come off as archaic in most social circumstances. There are no apps on it -- I only use it for texting and calling. I've heard that they've become trendy among hipsters, though, because of the long battery time (usually about a week) and simplicity.

On the other hand, I've been missing all the cool apps for years -- like Tinder and stuff.

Hopefully, you'll get used to your new phone eventually.
    I am extremely serious.

    biggrin

Which phone is it? I must admit I have a love-hate relationship with touchscreen phones. I even went as far as to get a Blackberry at one point, which was a huge mistake. Horrible piece of equipment. But for all the cons of a smartphone, mostly just the battery life and typing, they're outweighed by the pros (for me). Still, I'm not one of these people who MUST HAVE the NEWEST phone - I'm still using a 2010 iPhone 4. (Admittedly it does need an upgrade since its battery is at about 20% capacity, and runs extremely slow with the newer iOS's.)

I should respond through my phone just for shits and giggles...but I hate it so intensely that it's not that I cannot be bothered, I actively feel a physical aversion against doing it.

I'm seriously considering switching to ablackberry.
    Physical keyboards are UNBEATABLE.
If I could go back to my E71 I would do so in a picosecond...but support for Symbian has expired all over the globe, so the risk is just too great: very shortly nothing will work anymore (including my beloved Maps application)!

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini (which is roughly the same size as the E71, which is one of the prime reasons I went for it. I cannot understand how people can walk around with tablet phones the size of school blackboards! dizzy )

Big fan of Samsung overall. Generally the quality of their gear -from hard disks to TVs- is top notch, and I love their designs.

    Shit.

I have to say that for work I'm using an iPhone (Not by choice: it was thrust upon me), and the battery life, in comparison to my Samsung, is quite a bit better.
Of course it's still ABSOLUTE SHIT compared to my one-charge-a-week, standby time roughly three decades E71, but I'm trying not to dwell on that.

That's all true (even though I disagree that Samsung design is something to admire). But even the crappiest smartphone -or indeed phone- is a miracle of human ingenuity and nature. Though it's little consolation when, for example, a page won't load while we're sitting on the toilet. Smartphones are the definition of first world problems.
