I would have liked Patrick Doyle to work on it since he was the composer for the same director on Goblet of Fire. -
- CommentTimeApr 18th 2009
Doyle's scores for GoF and Eragon were excellent. I'm sure he could've delivered great here too. -

Don't forget Sinbad: Legend Of The Seven Seas. Surely one of his best.
Defintely, and one of my favs!
It's been too long since I listened to it. Thanks for reminding me!'no passion nor excitement here, despite all the notes and musicians' ~ Falkirkbairn -

If HGW produced more scores like that, I wouldn't be bitching! -

Yay! A 30-second theme repeated without variation for a full hour! How exciting. -

But that's a Bruckheimer project. I don't expect much.
Cause you didn't expect the musical styling of At World's End or Veronica Guerrin or Remember the Titans? -

HAHA!!! That's so true.
In the end, I don't doubt that Harry will be able to write themes and work in the orchestral/choral realm, I hope that he'll be provided with the opportunity to do so. -

When it comes to Remember the Titans, Bruckheimer will always accept Americana. Veronica Guerin was an Ireland-based movie and still, it's one of Gregson-Williams's more electronic efforts, even with Bad News and The Killing (and all those jigs). At World's End may hint some change, yes.http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website -

Zimmer can get the change, Harry will not receive that luxury

Wow, lots more HGW hatred here. But then I don't hate his Narnia stuff. It's really an extension of his style and just because it's not John Powell, doesn't make it bad.
I don't really "hate" Harry Gregson-Williams, but I'm not exactly keen on his approach and attitude to film music.
Gotcha. I'm curious though, where did you find the info about his attitude toward composing only for money? I mean, doesn't most composers do it for the money?
Obviously you know I didn't. It was a slightly sarcastic remark, similiar to yours.
But from the interviews I've read and seen, and not least the music I hear from him, it seems to me he lacks the passion for great film music that any good composer should have. (Yes of course composers do it for the money, but that should not be the main driving force behind each composer's gig, and I'm sure it isn't for many composers. I certainly don't imagine John Williams' main reason for scoring films these days is because of the money.)
Let me tell you, from my own close experience with him during SONCINEMAD 1, 2006. He's bored by it all; he seems very tired and outside his league, whatever that might be. Lack of passion is the phrase here it seems. Or agoraphobia :PLove Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

He's done some good stuff as well, like KOH and Spy Game and Sinbad. And as music, they've not been terribly boring to listen to, nor are they as unimaginative as you guys are making it out to be.
I´d add some other (underrated and overlooked) very good works like "The Borrowers", "Veronica Guerin", "The Magic of Marciano", "Gone Baby Gone", "Team America" and (in a lesser degree but also remarkable at least in the context of the film) "Man on Fire".
A good amount of very good music IMO.
The borrowers is full of mickey mousing from what i remember, veronica guerin and Gone baby gone are indeed 2 very emotional scores and The magic of Marciano is terribly cliched with just a couple of bright moments; Team America is standard RC-isms, very cliched but very enjoyable. Overall, i'd not rate those scores as highly.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Variety article on Harry (For those who thinks that HGW has a "lack of passion" toward film composition and is just doing it for the money.)

I agree with you. Probably he truly does have passion but he's certainly shown no chops....at least where I'm concerned. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

You all can be so harsh.
Play a bit more his Dragon Theme from Shrek or something like that.Kazoo -

It's Shrek's theme, not dragon's
I like it, but I adore his "Fairytale Theme" better. It really sounds like fairytale themeLabels are for cans, not people. - Anthony Rapp -

I actually prefer the official album editing since it flows really well. But, it's amazing how many variations Harry had to create for the movie. -

I'm curious about what "chops" you're concerned that Harry doesn't have? Judo Chop? Karate Chop? -

The Fairytale theme reminds me of one of the themes from Goldsmith's Mulan. -

Yeah, and then Ridley Scott changed those for cues from other scores / composers. Great Ridley, great...Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you
