    Hmm... those clips leave me rather underwhelmed... pity! But I still want to listen to the whole thing. But those sound clips sound to me like HGW wrote this in his sleep...

    Well, it doesn't sound like he's breaking any grounds. But I can see myself wanting to listen to it.

    i love this kind of filmmusic. i always loved his music for the tony scott movies and was hoping to hear this kind of score in this film again. it is true, sounds like nothing ground breaking, but nonetheless i love this atmospheric, dreamy music with the electronic rhythems. ans i think, these score have always simple but very nice themes.

  2. Really enjoyed HGW's score to The Equalizer, yet I can't rate it too highly. It's just all a little too familiar.

    A very convincing argument. I whole-heartedly agree (and I suspect I will too with Southall's review). I rather hope HGW returns for Prometheus 2 (of whatever it's called), and scores the entire thing with his theme from the first film as the basis.

    You mean John Williams' theme from The River. tongue

    Actually, that was one of the many aspects of Prometheus that bothered me... the over use of that theme.

    Which is basically a re-purposed version of THE RIVER. Yes, it's good, but it was over used in Prometheus!

    I don't get the love that this score is getting from the CD listen alone. I just don't.

    I can't wait to see the movie though. But this music does little to nothing for me as a stand alone listen.

    When it first appeared it didn't seem that anyone liked it. And HGW rarely does much for me, even when others get all excited. So I really didn't expect to like this at all.
  7. It's a pleasant enough listen but it doesn't do much for me at an active-listening level. Not a bad album - it's nice to have on in the background, that's for sure - but I don't get the huge praise (other than the fact that it really is new ground for HGW). I can see exactly why James likes it though, as it seems just like the sort of textural score he enjoys: bit of Martinez, bit of Price, bit of "intellectual/minimalist Zimmer", bit of Thomas Newman etc.

    Oooh...you just sold me! I do seem to remember the score being quite outrovert, though, when I saw the film.
    I am extremely serious.
  8. It is a bit more traditionally melodic than a lot of those outfits I mentioned (especially a cue like "Crossing Mars"), but on the whole I'd definitely say it's textural in nature.
  9. I would say that The Martian is what I'd call a harmonious score. While it is thematic and no doubt about that (indeed, the score does feature a variation on the main theme in every track), it's mostly about being pleasantly harmonious (there is some action dissonance, but even that's pleasant listening as opposed to something like, say, Sicario, which makes a point in being relentlessly bleak and violent) and it's largely about texture. I'm not sure if I would compare it that much to The Social Network (OK, that ostinato-based final track, but with the sound HGW aimed for he could have very well got that idea on his own). It's been also compared to Martinez, but I can't speak about that as I don't really know Martinez's work.

    What is there and not many people actually do notice (Jon did, I think) is that there is a nice Vangelis air to some cues. The finale of the score, for example, before going into a James Horner/Jerry Goldsmith (a bit of both, really) has a purely Vangelisesque pleasant texture to it. There is quite a bit of that all over the score.

    All-in-all, while I know that Kingdom of Heaven is the fan favourite, I think what HGW achieved this time is something that Ridley Scott is in dire need of - it's really co-creating the film world more than KoH ever did. And while the references are here and there (the Zimmerish strings at the end of the first cue, outside of the electronic influences - Lady in the Water in Build the Bomb and even some Don Davis-like string writing in the final cue), it's very firmly a Harry Gregson-Williams score and the soundscape is built very carefully and, at the same time, very consequently. That's why I'd say, yes, I prefer it to Sinbad (which is a lot of fun) and Kingdom of Heaven (though the choral writing there is yet unsurpassed in his career).

    Good thoughts there Pawel. I might agree with every thing you said there too.
    It's a score I'm very much enjoying and exploring it reveals more layers with each listen.
