  1. I'd like to inquire what outcome of thursday's referendum or English and Scottish board members predict. Will the Scotts take that leap into the unknown or will they stick with what the know and have?

You make it sound like a romantic thing if they do get independence. It won't be by a long shot if they do. They'll screw themselves over. We're living in a globalised world, and it's only because of some misplaced Scottish pride that people will vote yes.

I certainly fucking hope they don't show Braveheart on the tellybox...

I am hoping that there's a NO vote as the outcome on Thursday. The worst that could happen is that people vote YES to get at the English/Tories/Westminster and then waken up the next day wondering what they are going to do next.

Voting for independence and then working out how it is going to work seems to be the wrong way to do it.

Well said Alan and I agree with you.

If I were Scottish ( which I partly am by blood ) I'd be sorely tempted to give patronising* blow-hard Cameron and his useless bullingdon boys school government a fabulous bloody nose.

Such true words. These days, people of Catalonia are also wetting their pants as well due to Scottish's movements for 'independence'. With EU having its core problems, Russia moving dangerously around, frigging retarded goat-screwing Allah Snackbar ISIL running around waving machetes, this is the worst time in modern history to choose to do something like that. It's because of those sadly widely shared, stupid and unfounded sentiments imo, that drive those people around: that for every bad thing and awful economy we are going through right now, the others, the strangers, the EU, the whatever 'others' are to blame for our problems. Everyone but us. So yeah let's break free and go independent. This is not the way to solve problems and i'd say the same applies to UK wanting to break free from the EU.

  3. Yeah, I'm with you, D. I wish someone would tell that to those idiots from the AfD (anti-EU German political party that was founded last year) that somehow managed to get 12%!!!!!!!!! in the Brandenburg provincial elections a couple days ago. suicide

Well idiots are everywhere my friend, we must accept this. Golden Dawn, Greece's fanatical right-wings (and also anti-EU) is around that percentage as well. And Syriza, the current government's opposition, is 2nd party right now and might also win next government elections in Greece in two years. They are anti-EU well (or so protest now, to get the votes from the angry people).

It's been so fascinating, the Scottish election campaign, even though of course I can't participate. I can understand the wish to be independent, even though it seems based mostly on emotion and not logic. There is a stark contrast between the "don't worry about the details, it'll all be OK in the end" attitude of the yes campaign and the "everything will be rubbish if you vote yes" attitude of the no campaign, such a contrast between the positive and the negative.

I suspect it would be disastrous for the Scots if they do vote yes (it's interesting that a decade or so ago, Alex Salmond cited the examples of the then-prosperous Ireland and Iceland as countries an independent Scotland could aspire to be like - you won't find him citing those examples today, I suspect). There seems to be the implication from the yes campaign that they'll create some sort of socialist paradise and do so at the same time as slashing income tax - I don't think you need to be a seasoned economist to question that. I'm sure there's an element of "we hate the Tories" about it, but lots of people in England and Wales hate the Tories too and (like the people of Scotland) they get to have the other lot in about 50% of the time - that's just the way of a democracy.

Ironically I think there would be barely any great effect on the rest of the UK if the Scots do break off - but there could be a much more significant effect if they do not, since that appears to mean a far greater devolution for Scotland, which would surely lead to some sort of federalisation within the UK (otherwise it would be very unfair on England and would probably lead to an even greater groundswell of support for the extremist UKIP, which the mainstream parties would be desperate to avoid).

Will be fascinating to see what happens. I suspect no will win, but it's looking very tight.

I've heard stories that Scotland has always looked to Norway for inspiration -- especially since we went through much of the same in our struggle and eventual separation from occupying nations Denmark and Sweden in the 19th and 20th century. And that they feel they have much in common with us.

They have a point -- not only in terms of scenery, but a cultural base as well.

Go Scotland! Get your independence NOW!
    I am extremely serious.

Other than the UK losing 90% of its North Sea oil and generally becoming a lot more conservative, you mean?

I doubt that either of those things would happen, really. I have no idea why the first one wouldn't other than it seems to be generally accepted that it wouldn't (presumably because all the investment that makes the revenue possible was from the whole of the UK and not just Scotland) and I suspect the second point would just balance out (it's sometimes said that Labour would never win an election without Scottish votes but that's not true, looking back, even recently - I guess Labour would shift a bit towards the centre to win more votes but when they do so and build up the support, things will probably just drift back to "normal" afterwards - there's a long term shift of support away from the Tories anyway as their natural voter base, frankly, dies off and is not really being replaced by new supporters amongst the young).
  5. It baffles me that, with two days to go, there are major unanswered questions, such as what the Scottish currency would be. They want to keep the pound but that almost seems to defeat the objective of being independent! I understand they want more power, and I believe they should get more power. But you can't 'wing it', this independence thing. It's heartfelt, but not very well thought through. I hope the Scots vote #NoThanks. And I also hope that Scotland and Westminster find a path that suits the Scots better.

I will certainly miss all the raping and pillaging after all these years of occupying their land should they vote YES.
