Since I am English I guess it is hard for me to really comment on what frustrations the people of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have with the political process in the country, but I do wonder if some level of federalism- where each of the four nations have some degree of "independence" - would be a more satisfying situation than what we have now.
  2. There is some level of frustration in England since there seems to now be a scramble for some constitutional change in England, including some northern cities.

I wonder if Manchester or Newcastle would still use the pound?

I predict that the number of people who will sign this petition will reach 1,617,989.

Sounds like a sure way of being united.
  6. So England and Scotland are dominated now by their respective national parties while Labour gets worn down in between.
Does that mean that in 20 years there will be England outside the EU, Scotland inside the EU with the river Tweed being a Schengen border?

I'm not convinced there will actually be a referendum. They'll only hold it if they think we'd vote to stay in.

As an outsider looking in, I am always highly entertained, absolutely fascinated and frequently appalled by US presidential elections. With all the chatter from my American Facebook friends about the next one, I was starting to look forward to it in November, before I realised to my slight horror that it's actually not until November next year.

The issues these things are fought on and the candidates judged on (abortion - seriously?!?) and not fought on (guns, for heaven's sake - do something about it) seem so strange. Some of the freakshow candidates, who occasionally end up becoming president (the second Bush!?!? - wtf?!?) - Sarah Palin, a terrifying character. And now of course Donald Trump.

But while I'm fascinated by it I rarely comment on it because I know how annoying it can be when ill-informed foreigners comment on "your" country and I worry about being too ill-informed myself. (After the recent UK election I saw one of my American Facebook friends write "Idiot British electing Cameron - Toryism is the single most evil political force in the world right now" - and bearing in mind "Toryism" is some considerable way to the political left of any American government in my lifetime, and that I don't think it's really too hard to think up a list of political forces in the world that are at least somewhat more "evil" than the present British government - I realised how annoying this sort of thing can be.)

Anyway, that's a long-winded and pointless post. The main reason of the post was simply to link to this, which to my uneducated mind feels like quite an astute analysis of the Donald Trump thing.

  8. I hardly think "an imperial presidency" is a fair assessment of Obama's time in office, but yeah, the article raises some good points. Bizarre that anybody in the world who isn't a member of a hitherto undiscovered tribe of pygmies could honestly think that Trump represents the interests of the common man.

The day the phrase 'a person of faith' is seen as an insult rather than a compliment, clowns like this will surely find it nigh on impossible to get into office. Utter non-issues like abortion will be seen as a curiosity of history. What's terrifying about Palin (and her ilk) is that despite every word that comes out of her mouth proving the echo chamber between her ears, no matter what she says, so long as she plays the faith card, the sheep will follow.

...but yes. Trump. It's a horror show.
