Has anyone seen this and can comment? I've always been a fan of the director, but this one here is getting so many ODD reviews and people describing various heavily disturbing things with it, that i am not sure if i really want to view it!Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

It is terrible. Awful. Product of a sick mind. Anyway, if you wanna see a woman jerking off a guy ´til he bleeds, just before performing a clitoris ablation on herself (close-up shots in both cases, so you don´t miss a detail), be my guest.
It´s been said that Von Trier made the film after a terrible personal issue. Well, he should have gone to the shrink, like everybody else.

I've always loved von Trier too (and I somehow suspect that Marselus hasn't seen many of his previous films?) - he's always good at provoking. The nude/porn scenes in THE IDIOTS is another example, or the execution scenes in DANCER IN THE DARK. I'm very curious about this one....I wonder if it's anything like Oshima's REALM OF THE SENSES, just even more twisted?I am extremely serious. -

You are right Thor. I had seen a couple of films by Von Trier before Antichrist. Enough to know he is one of the most pretentious directors I know. Not that I blame him though: he´s done pretty good at film festivals.
Not that I don´t like provocation in films, but this guy disguises his films with provocation when there´s only arrogance and pretentiousness (is that last word correctly written?).Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you -

Hmm...I'm afraid I don't see what is "pretentious" about his films. He's got his own style and approach to the film medium. It's never boring and it's always interesting. IMO. And I CERTAINLY don't see any ARROGANCE(????) in there. Can a film be arrogant in the first place?I am extremely serious. -

I think people consider him arrogant because he said he was the best director in the world at the Antichrist press conference, and he's known for making similar remarks from time to time. Anyone who knows a bit about Trier though knows that it's all part of his humour and desire to provoke.
Personally I'm curious about Antichrist too, though I'm sure I'll cringe at the mutilation scenes. A movie that divides reviewers like that, is bound to contain something of interest.

I've often found him to be quite arrogant, usually through the remarks he makes surrounding a film's making/promotion rather than through the content of the films. The only film where that arrogance really comes into play is his FIVE OBSTRUCTIONS piece. The fifth remake of Leth's 'Perfect Human Being' presented in that film is a symptom of how casual his arrogance is.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

Ah, so you were talking about the PERSON von Trier. Well, as plindboe says, it's all part of his "project" or "image", if you will. If you take it with a pinch of salt, as we say up here, it's really nothing to get riled up about.I am extremely serious. -

So, it's torture AND porn? Yeah, i DO see the problem with it. Is there a meaning in it too, or just porn? 'CAuse if it's the latter (or even simply gore) there are FAR BETTER movies in those genres to watch i am afraid.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

I'm sure there are, Demetris, but I've often labelled von Trier an "intellectual director making visceral movies", so I'm not sure a SAW or a HOSTEL or a SHAVING RYAN'S PRIVATES offer quite the same level of filmatic quality.I am extremely serious. -

It is not a torture porn film Demetris (at least, not the same crappy torture porn Saw or Hostel are), but there aree definitely some torture porn moments, if you know what I mean. As for the meaning of those, I´m sure Von Trier fans and reviewers will find it. I wasn´t able.

I wouldn´t put Saving Private Ryan in the same category as the other two you mention though, not even for its gory moments. In Spielberg´s film they are totally justified.Anything with an orchestra or with a choir....at some point will reach you -

Eh...yes, I know. I was talking about the famous porno film that took its name from the Spielberg epic. Perhaps I should just have mentioned GANGBANGERS III or something to avoid any confusion.I am extremely serious. -
