If they can cut to the grieving family in super slo-mo stylish city bending fashion it could be cool.

am I missing the point here?

Showing violence for the sake of violence is fucking pointless and make me want to kick the producers' heads in. That said, I think its effect on the public's attitudes is negligible.

Also, I think this thread has been well and truly hijacked. With swearing. And guns. And violence. And sex.

On a more serious note I feel that if violence gets in the way of the story rather than aids it by being integral as an aesthetic aspect (many martial arts films), artistic aspect (Sergio Leone westerns), story aspect (la Battaglia di Algeri) and/or an emotional aspect (Raging Bull), then it may at best be annoying (standard blockbuster fare), at worst sickening (torture porn).

I'm not sure what you mean by 'getting a rise', but it's strangely arousing.

Precisely. Also, these films are just as bad as snuff films.

    It's disgusting!

    Exactly!

I failed to mention Saw and Hostel because I automatically knew not to waste my time. No Country For Old Men and Departed were different, thus I wasted my money on them. I would have been much better off having purchased a CD which I could enjoy forever.

None of you answered my question as to what happened in The Killers. Are you telling me it would have been a far greater film if the violence had been shown. I think not.

And you have a filthy mouth Steven. You could clean up your language a bit. Even I use a four letter word from time to time so I'm not that prudish. You on the otherhand are different.

I replied to your Killers example actually:

Steven... you're better than that. I know you were trying to be funny but show just a little respect. I'll be one of the first to admit that sometimes I too use colourful language around here but in this instance I don't think it was called for.

    Tonight we'll go see Inception!

I'm looking forward to it. A while ago we were planning to go the the theatre as well and then it was like 'hm, Prince of Persia or Robin Hood' but neither got us very excited. It was more like a socializing opportunity than wanting to see the movie. Now I want to see the movie!

By the way, I had a weird dream this night that I went to see this movie. I was too late for some reason so I missed the first 5 minutes (aarrrgh). Then the movie started and it was a mix of Barn Yard and Shaun the Sheep, something with an animated black bull... I was disappointed and fell asleep.
    rolleyes

Thinking back now, falling asleep in my dream is the only link to the actual movie I can find! I could have had a dream within a dream...
    wink

This imagined version of INCEPTION is considerably more surreal than anything actually in the film!

  2. We had a bit of a day out yesterday and watched TOY STORY 3 in the morning and INCEPTION in the afternoon. Both were excellent.

The latter film was quite gripping - though I did find it hard to follow at times! Zimmer's music I just found annoying and intrusive. It's far more enjoyable on CD.

Saw the movie during a midnight showing. Loved it, and I found Zimmer's score just boring but it was brilliantly done in the final 10-15 minutes of the film (especially timed to the simultaneous slow-mo "kick" sequence).

Sigh. Now I know how Erik felt about The Dark Knight. Most of the music in Inception just felt lazy and uninspired (loved the Vangelis-inspired bits). I do agree with Clemenson's review that Nolan just doesn't have a clue to properly handle a film soundtrack -- again, like James said, someone like Elliot Goldenthal would've been able to deliver that texture Nolan wanted but also melodic.

I'm at the point where if I met Nolan, I'd ask him why, why he likes dumbing down the music for his films when they're so good they're above a RC score.

Wow, couldn't disagree more with you, Matt (I thought it was a fantastic score throughout), but at least we both liked the film.
