MONSTERS is a 2010 film ( or was it only released in Norway this year? ), I thought it was one of the best films I've seen for a long time.

Of your list I've only seen two of those films, HANNA and 'APES', enjoyed both immensely.

You must have seen very few movies then.

I thought the movie had some good ideas, but most of it focused on the two most boring characters ever, played by crap actors. They talked and talked and talked and talked. For a movie called Monsters, the monsters sure didn't get alot of playtime.

That's one of its major strengths, IMO. Very refreshing. The title just alludes to its philosophical nature, the 'monsters' being an image of the minority population/fauly immigration policy. But if you went into this expecting a typical B-monster movie, I can see why you were disappointed. It would be like going into DRIVE expecting FAST AND THE FURIOUS 5! In fact, I believe there was an American woman who sued the producers of DRIVE for the film not being just that! LOL! smile

The trailer did promise alot more than it delivered though. If the trailer had been honest it would have said "Coming soon: A movie with substandard actors who spend at least an hour talking about random stuff". An honest movie title would have been Boring people, instead of Monsters.

I did think it had some great elements though. With better actors and characters it could have worked for me.

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree on its merits, as the difference is probably cemented in the types of film we prefer.

Perhaps I'm just oversensitive to bad actors. It's a shame they ruined the movie for me, as I loved the plot, and I liked how you constantly heard jets and distant bombings as if it were a war zone. Also, I found the ending a bit lackluster, and the message a bit silly. I wish I could forget about all the flaws and just immerse myself in the plot and the giant monsters.

For me that made it more "naturalistic", it's a brilliant piece of maverick film making ( I recommend the 'making of' documentary included on the DVD ).

Still, you didn't like it Peter, fair nuff.

That's a good point. One thing that impressed me about the movie is that they managed to make it seem very realistic. Had A-list actors starred in it, it might have taken some of the realism out of it.

I think I might see it again. Perhaps I'll like it more on second viewing.
