    Dear mt gang,

I've recently started teaching film music and film sound in a large private college here in Thessaloniki, Greece and my Music Technology / Sound engineering students have become increasingly interested so far, to the whole subject. They've specifically asked me for videos where they can see our favorite composers / sound editors and engineers at work, i.e. videos from recording sessions, studio tours, orchestral recordings etc etc. Now next lesson is in one day and while i have several videos in minds, i'd greatly appreciate it if you could help me with this a bit, reminding me videos and links which i'll probably forget about and which you consider important and of course, interesting! Bearing in mind that my students are mostly on the technical level of things, it's logical than both musical but also specifically technical videos on film music is what interests me the most at this point!

    Thanks a lot in advance,
    D wave

  1. Generally any DVD featurette? Black Hawk Down and Lord of the Rings have great ones. Zimmer's Gladiator featurette is merely an interview with him, but BHD, LotR. Horner has a few DVD featurettes (Perfect Storm may be to look into). It's all on youtube, really. Definitely Zimmer's Pirates of the Caribbean stuff IS online.

One of the best I've seen are parts 1 and 2 of the King Kong (2005) production diaries with JNH scoring, recording, speaking with Peter Jackson about the score, and interviews with the sound crew including score mixers, orchestrators, etc.

If I were teaching you're class this is what I would show.

    Part 1

    Part 2

Tons here mate. I just hope they like MG!

Rataouille on blu ray has the absolute best behind the scenes video filmed by Giacchino's son, Mick. It was all shot on a camcorder, but it's considerably better than any of the "professional" behind the scenes vids out there! (The Ratatouille vid on the site is a different one however).

I also seem to recall Brian Tyler doing a swell tour of his studio during the production of Eagle Eye. It was a two part video but I forget the site. shame

Good luck with that D! I think the Goldsmith DVD should be out on youtube if I recall correctly. You should check it out, its great! Also, the documentary on the scoring process of Empire Strikes Back with John Williams provides some fantastic insight to one of the greatest musical minds of our time! That is also all over the web.
