True Blood

Have just watched the first couple of episodes of this HBO series, from the creator of Six Feet Under. Graphic violence, lots of sex and nudity, extremely bad language... what's not to like!?

In this house we think it's great also.

There's a lot of watchable stuff on TV at the moment: Fringe, Flash Forward, Warehouse 13, Stargate Universe, Modern Family...and True Blood. I thought that this week's True Blood was excellent.

Ha ha . It seems like your typical Alan Ball production. I was really intrigued by this since I watched the whole Six Feet Under series and thoroughly enjoy his themes. I watched Towelhead recently which is the kind of movies that "stays" with you for days because it really challenges you. The main topic is racism. Yes, there is also graphic violence, lots of sex and nudity and extremely bad language. I loved the movie. Thomas Newman hit the right spot too.

I fail to see how that really matters, but there is one, and it's quite an intriguing premise. I look forward to the rest!

I really want to see that but it's not an easy film to track down. I don't believe it was ever released here in any form (cinema or DVD).

True Blood is quite good indeed. As is its music (Nathan Barr), especially the love theme.Interesting take on vampires.

I thought the film (story) had its heart and intentions in the right place, but it tried too hard with (way) too many complications to make the potentially powerful basic storyline really see the light.
I would have greatly prefered the film to focus on -witness the title- what could be perceived as the main story line: an American Arabian girl in the US during the time of the first Gulf War.

More than enough powerful drama and sociological commentary in that.
But nooooo...she has to come from a dysfunctional family (issues of child molestation) AND be sexually precocious (Lolita syndrome; psychological issues) AND get involved with a black guy (racism issues) AND get involved with an old man (abuse issues) AS WELL.
Just too many ingredients, which in the end spoilt the broth for me.
Which is a shame, as the subject was an interesting one, and the acting overall above par.

BLADE RUNNER DIRECTOR'S CUT

A very cold and unsatisfying movie in a dramatic aspect ( like a lot of Ridley Scott movies).

But the atmosphere and all the visual aspect is sublime, mind blowing and still top notch.

You've hit the nail on the target there buddy. Blade Runner is great but because it sets up so much distance between the its futuristic, depressing world and the audience, it's a movie that's hard to swallow. And have you seen it on blu-ray? A feast for the eyes, I assure you. The visual effects and set design are still just as fantastic as 27 years ago.

Character warmth is overrated. I preferred it back in these older films when Ridley wasn't straining to create it. It was more interesting to sit with after seeing the film, and the film was so remarkably put together that you didn't lose interest during it.

Yes, it seemed like a "melting pot" kind of script but I do think he reflects the modern society in our big cities, in some countries anyway. Pluralism and multiculturalism. How does it changes our lives? Over all , I think he achieves the film purpose. Do we care for this "struggling with her hormonal changes" teenager in a dysfunctional family? Do we care to ask questions about our inner racism sentiments? For me, the answer of both questions were yes so the film worked.

Fair enough.
For myself I would have loved more emphasis on the father who so struggles with his identity as an American and an Arab.

Yes, that would have been interesting. I think we did have some of that in his reactions to his daughter and also in his own contradictions presented by the author. We had glimpses of what were his struggles but as a secondary character in the movie, I thought that he was still very well fleshed out.

This was a very enjoyable film featuring the world's worst dog, but ...
man, what a tearjerker. As someone who has a dog and loves dogs, this was devastating. I couldn't help myself at the end...
It's awful. Believe me, it doesn't have a reason for existence. And it's not helped by the hideous HGW snoozer either.

Yesterday i saw

THE AGE OF STUPID

Can't remember the last time i've watch such a clever, well-informed and full of logical arguments documentary in general, esp. about the earth's slow dying due to her not so favorite inhabitants - us, humans. It's shot and edited impressively too, and it's presented like a docu-in-movie. Very impressive in all aspects, humane and anti-human at the same time, mesmerizing and something you'll be thinking about for some time to come....deeply recommended.

The Time Traveler's Wife

I don't belong to the group who bashed this movie. I had read the novel some years before and I think the moviemakers kept all the important things from the book. Yes, it was not as dark as the novel and they stressed the romantic side of it more, but for me it was a highly enjoyable movie that didn't fail to touch me. I also liked Danna's score.

Watched the first half of Public Enemies last night, before having to switch off as I was falling asleep.
The major reason was that I only had a couple of hours sleep the night before, but the film didn't do match to capture my attention either.

It's not a bad film, but nothing much interesting happens dramatically (I don't need to watch it for the storyline: I'm well up with old-time gangsters).

Playing Dillinger off as a sort of latter day Jesse James (who generally is played off as not really a bad guy, just a bit of a scoundrel) doens't sit very well with me, but that's a minor quibble. The main concern I have it's all so remote and emotionally aloof.
The film's promise was quite high pitched for me as in not quite the initial scene, but in one of the introductory scenes Purvis (Christian Bale) guns down Pretty Boy Floyd in an apple orchard. The photography, direction, editing and the highly anachronistic -but incredibly effective- Ten Thousand Slaves by Otis Taylor are *really* excellent!).

But the film just falls flat after that.
So far Dillinger (Depp) tells unknown girl she's his. Girl says OK. There are gun battles. Dillinger is captured. Dillinger escapes. There are gun battles. Dillinger robs a bank. Bale's jawline looks chiseled. There are gun battles.... Pffff... There was more dramatic and emotional life in the old The Untouchables(the old Desilu series)!

Those gun battles incidentally look great...but I couldn't care less about any of the characters which are all interchangeable. So they're not particularly exciting.

With all the possibilities this historical character has, matched with the then revolutionary re-organisation of the mob, coupled with the FBI's immensely interesting politics and the very disturbing relationship between Purvis and Hoover could have made a dynamite film that could have easily gripped the attention for the full two and a half hours of the film length.
As it is, sitting through it is a bit of a chore.

Goldenthal's overly dark and apocalyptic-sounding score doesn't help speed things along, or indeed to even make them more interesting. (Why would you want to score a car chase with blazing guns like a scene in a concentration camp?)

I still have 45 minutes to go, but I fear this film will go down as a relatively boring and overpompous miss for me.
