But be aware, I don't usually like the genre of young adult/stupid funny/raunchy/sex comedies.

Yeah, but there was more to it. It was actually a very clever script!

Let's agree to disagree. I will only say this, I found Land of the Lost, to be more enjoyable than The Hangover (and I don't like Will Ferrell)!

    Or perhaps...

How about that ride in? I guess that’s why they call it Sin City (hahaha)

You guys may not know this, but I consider myself…a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack, it grew by one. So were two…so there was two of us in the pack. I…I was alone first in the pack, and then Doug joined in later.

And 6 months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys. I thought…wait a second, could it be. And now I know for sure, I just added 2 more guys to my wolf pack. 4 of us wolves running around the desert together, in Las Vegas looking for strippers and cocaine. So tonight, we make a toast!

    The Graduate

I admit I saw this movie the first time yesterday. Am I missing the point or it is really just a generic movie about growing up and love? It didn't say anything for me, I just didn't understand all the awards and the fame. The actors, actresses were great but the story was not something special.
Anyway, another famous movie from film history could be checked off.

Well, you sort of have to see it its era, for starters.
The subject matter was a far more controversial one forty years ago!

That said, it is very much not a movie about growing up or love.
In fact, it's a movie about estrangement and isolation.
    <some spoilers follow>

Not one of the characters in the movie is capable of making a clear emotional or psychological connection to anyone else and every single person only acts out of his or her self interest. There are many scenes and aspects that indicate this in a more or less stylized fashion (the pool scene would be one, where Hoffman's character symbolically severs all ties to people, keeping himself in an isolated, contained universe underwater -ironically pushed there by his parents) , but to my mind the very best example of the overall estranged disconnection is that throughout the whole of the film, we never get to hear Mrs. Robinson's name!. Even in bed, she is only "Mrs. Robinson".

Even at the very end, on the bus, with their immediate needs satisfied ("rescued" in what amounts to nothing more than a Romantic Elopement fantasy), Benjamin and Elaine are unable to talk to each other.
They don't even know how to relate now. Elaine tries to contact Benjamin a few times -a smile, a touch- but fails.

It is -to me- a very uncomfortable and biting study of suburban aloofness and disconnection to anything outside of selfish needs. The ending to me is sad beyond belief.
It's not a flawless picture by any means, but it is very good.

    Fair enough. smile
There are many films out there generally taken to be "very good"that do absolutely nothing for me, too.

At the end of the day any proper connection is a personal one.
Not one because "somebody tells you to".

    THE LOVELY BONES

This is what Peter Jackson has been doing for so long? Green-box porn, unnecessarily cheesy and in the end-nothing new in the genre; at all. And the BRIAN ENO score sounds lovely on CD but it completely fails to fit, elevate or even enhance the visuals the slightest. Wrong choice for the film.

  3. Cloverfield

I never saw this at the cinema and I've always been a bit wary about whether I'd like the style and/or the glances of the beast that were reported to be all that was seen.

But I really enjoyed it. The hand-held style was done in a way that it was obvious that it was shot using a hand-held camera (in the movie at least) but not in the least motion-sickness inducing.

Cloverfield is hugely entertaining, monstrous fun...

  5. "The Journey of Natty Gann"

To see how much score was missing from the Intrada. Turns out it's like the Varese "Ghostbusters" and GB bootleg -- both missign stuff from the film.

All told, probably around ten minutes or so missing.

Anyway, I had seen the film partly many, many years ago and compeltely forgotten about it. This was a well made, shot, written, and plotted film. There was almost nothing wrong with it. It's very touching, emotional ... I can't imagine Disney is capable of making a movie like this ever again.

As I recall, the director or Brian said an interview that he didn't score the scenes per se, but rather made cues based on the film, and they were then moved where necessary.

^ You're right, it sounds like that. But anyway it's a rather disjoint and quite shallow movie itself, the music is its last problem really.

What did you like about it? Curious.

It put me to sleep. Completely lacking any plot whatsoever and filled with unnecessary details nobody wanted to learn. Painfully slow and without much to say. The lead actress' performance was notable though and those who accuse Desplat of cold and austere writing, should watch this; his score was the only alive element in the film.

  8. I liked the relationships, really. The older guy, the American. The movie was pretty cold though. Tautou was amazing.

  9. The Blind Side

considering this box office champ never made it to our theaters, I needed to rent it on blu-ray. And it didn't disappoint. I knew what to expect, typical cliché story but who cares if it has Sandra Bullock acting amazingly. I'm not saying this is THE best acting performance of the year, but I'm sure it is top 5. She's so tough, so convincing, so honest. She makes the movie and elevates everyone around her. It's not as emotional as I was thinking but the brief moment do impress. All in all, I liked it and I laughed a lot during the movie.

    Invictus

Typical strong movie of Clint Eastwood that has a heart warming tale of trying to renew the faith of a nation by using a rugby team as tool. Considering it is the tale of Nelson Mandela himself, it makes it all the more interesting. Housing Morgan Freeman as Mandela and Matt Damon as the captain of the ruby team, it shows an honest, simple but very dedicated strength that makes the movie a lot stronger. Again the movie has humor and drama, but it's the simple strength of both Freeman and Damon that elevate this movie, including a lovely score that does the right tricks. Looks stunning on blu-ray as well.

    Waterworld

Fun adventure movie in a time when stunts were made by real men, and not made by CGI. The story is known but for me it is the cast that makes the movie. Costner is very convincing and his bond with the little child Enola (little child? shocked ) is extremely charming, but also the other cast is cool, with of course the late Dennis Hopper as ultra cool and fun as hell bad guy. Even though it bombed with most critics, this is a fun action packed adventure that is elevated by a truly epic score. Sometimes you need nothing more smile

    REC 2

Sequel to the Spanish hit horror movie REC, and basically it continues minutes after the first film has ended. Considering they've lost communication with the people inside, they send in a squad of soldiers to find out what happened to the people. Of course, there's something they are not telling them. The enormous strength of REC was the build up, and the convincing fear that each character delivered. Considering we know what to expect, most of that fear is gone. Also it's hard to start to care for the characters considering these aren't regular people, but tough soldiers. So the scare element is sparse (yet the few moments really scare the living shit out of you). Luckily the effects and action are top notch, and some are totally mind blowing, it even has a surprising twist at the end which I didn't saw coming (how on earth did they make that end scene? shocked ) I still miss the fear and development of REC though, so lesser than the first

I liked it - very nicely done, with some characters who act like real people. (Having spent the last week looking at the opening episodes of LOST, looking at COCO again sounds like some kind of heaven.) Sort of a female version of BATMAN BEGINS. Not enough dress-making though.

I like Waterworld too. And why not, it's a well made adventure film with brilliant production values. And not a convoluted storyline in sight.
