The Postman - James Newton Howard

I love this score. I think this is Howard's best action score to date. (Yes, I prefer this to Waterworld). The quieter parts are also very nice.
It's also a good thing that they put all those country songs at the end of the album so I can stop playing after the last score music and don't have to program out the songs.
By the way, I am one those very-very few people who als oliked the movie. I think it's basically rather stupid but very well directed and enjoyable. The role of the reluctant hero fits Kevin Costner very well.

Hey I like the film too, it has a hopeful and positive message unlike so many of today's flicks. It's old-school filmmaking with some flaws, but then I don't mind those flaws.

It's a good score but I would never rate it above Waterworld, which is my favourite JNH score. And don't those songs just plain suck? Whatever effect they have in the film, they just don't blend at all with the score, which is basically what everyone who bought it was after, they sure as hell didn't want this for the songs right?

My Dog Skip - William Ross

When I listen to this highly melodic, lyrical score I don't understand why Ross doesn't get more opportunities with mainstream movies. He has such a talent to write amazing melodies.

    NP:Quantum Of Solace (Arnold)

    Including his rejected song.

Mmm...the most enjoyable of his bond scores (for me). Casino royale has splendid themes, but the orchestrations are too "average" to sustain the 70 minutes listening.

a step forward in Arnold's careers, with really fresh textures and sounds.

"the palio" ,"pursuit at port prince", " target terminated", "Camille's Story""night at the opera" , "perla de las lunas" punk punk

I like that one! Though I don't have the album yet, the movie hit my weak spot and I'm sure the music had certain effect on it. cheesy

Is this the score which sounds very similar to Rudy?

The movie is also wonderful. It's so much more than the usual "boy-and-his-dog" kiddie movie. One of the best movies about growing up.

I'm still thinking What score I like most: Secret of Nimh or Legend.

The first doesn't have the annoying synths, and the second has better themes.

NP:POTC : At world's End (hans Zimmer and others)

I hope someday it will be a review about the original Album and the Suites from the "soundtrack treasures".

Going from Dead Man's Cheast to At World's End is one of the most impressive things Zimmer has done in his whole career. All i can say is "bravo Maestro" And I doesn't care about the Additional composers, because this score is GREAT!

"At Witt's End" is specially impressive. it has a real sense of Fantasy, epic and Adventure. it reminds me a little bit the Horner from land Before time or Shore Lord of the Rings.

    the love theme is gorgeous

    Wonderful and majestic?
I'm listening to my ROZSA TREASURY BOX.

Now THAT's wonderful and majestic! love

Some great material in there that I'd never heard before, like the guitar-driven soundtrack to the film Crisis (never heard of it), and some scores I'd never listened to before: The V.I.P.s, The Power (what a theme!) or All The Brothers Were Valiant.

However when push comes to shove it's the Big Few that really make my day: the album issues of El Cid, Quo Vadis and King Of Kings and the Muir Matheson recording of Knights Of The Round Table.

(That said: still plenty left to be discovered! love )

NIMH isn't exactly awful in the theme department either. Which is why I love it more.

And Legend? Those synths and disjointed nature of the music kills my enjoyment of it every time. Though it is at times breathtakingly gorgeous, I agree !

Agreed! But I thought you weren't allowed to listen to Zimmer this month... Does February come early in your part of the world? wink

NP - King Kong - James Newton Howard

What an incredible achievement given the time constraints. What am I talking about? Completely ignoring the time contraints this is a great score, which is all the more impressive. I've only listened to the first four tracks so far today, but right there at the beginning of the album you have as many great themes as you have tracks. Then there are the excellent final tracks. What a score!

My favourite is "That's All There Is" for the second half with the jazz theme

NP : The Three Musketeers - Michael Kamen

Just gonna repost something I wrote just now over at the MM.com forum.
Some people have agreed that The Three Musketeers is a well orchestrated version of RH. I'm not a big fan of Robin Hood (except for the main theme and love theme) so I thought that the action in RH were a bit lacking. I think it's a much better, well rounded score than Robin Hood.

TTM is more in the "old-fashioned" swashbuckling music type, inspired by the Baroque period of the setting, but written in a recognizable Michael Kamen style. Very thematic, with a nice fanfare and fills with many melodic details and passages, tops with a couple of really dynamic action cues built around various motifs. All were very well orchestrated ,and arrange for, what seems like, a big orchestra. The movie is still fun to watch as well. There's still a really good unreleased section of music for the ending battle in the French court that would complete this score for me. But what's available now is really excellent too. If you like Michael Kamen and his melodic side, as well as his action styling, you will like, if not love, this score.

I think as a film score, it's impossible to fault. But as an album, I guess -themes aside- it's not for everyone. Definitely the type of score I love though, one of my favourites.

Agreed. It's surely one of the greatest film scores ever composed. But solely as a listening experience, not so much. To me, mickey mousing on album always seems like alot of unfulfilling and incomplete fragments edited together at random. Of course when you watch the movie, you realize it's not random, but random is how it appears when you listen to it as an album outside of its intended context. I love Mickey mousing in movies, on albums I find it almost unlistenable.
