    Incredibly tragic photos and 2 shocking videos from the moment of the earthquake occurrence from Haiti and the situation there after the earthquake of January the 12th, 2010. For some reason, it also made me think of the grim and extremely violent portrayal of the future in such films as Children of Men, and how far (or not) are they really from reality.

    Very true words, where humans become animals from one day to the next. Maybe we aren't as "civilized" and "noble" as we like to arrogantly differentiate ourselves from the animals of this planet, which we dominate, kill and use up every single day...maybe, when disaster strikes, and basic instincts kick in, there's absolutely nothing "humane" that differentiates us from animals and their ways of survival.

  4. Part of me things that people are not helping the situation by acting so irresponsibly - but they are trying to survive. And all I have to do is look at my family around me and then I completely understand peoples' motives for trying to feed themselves and their own family.

    We can be too shielded from such things to truly understand actions in such situations.

    People are always talking about how the younger generation needs to do National Service in order to "get them in order", but I think that everyone needs to spend some time with less fortunate fellow human beings to see things from their point of view. Politicians certainly need to do this in order to understand things so that they can help.

    Exactly my point. We need to go through the kind of hell they are going through, to have the slightest idea of their position. Not criticize from the comfort and warmth of our couches. Deep inside, i think we, all humans, are the same, under such circumstances. Kill or be killed, steal or die from hunger, no matter how much we want to pretend otherwise.

    That clip is really something. When you see the camera shaking like it does you know that isn't done on purpose. We can hardly imagine what it must've been like that very moment.

    Agreed. Such catastrophes obliterate every sense of civilized upbringing and make humankind show what it really is, an animal trying to survive no matter what. We can compose music, write literature, do complex medical research, but in the end that's what man really is. Instinct takes over from intellect.

    Yeah, that sucks.

    As you can see, these disasters are nothing like Hollywood portrays them with gigantic, skyscraper-tall waves hitting the shores, but rather this massive "carpet" of water that pushes inward a kilometer or two and destroys anything in its way.

    Hopefully, this won't be as bad as the 2004 tsunami in terms of casualties and losses.
    I am extremely serious.
  10. I'm watching the news at the moment and it is all looking horrible. And there have been 30+ aftershocks of magnitude 5.0 and over!

    This is shocking, also since there's many after-shocks and the waves apparently are higher than some of the islands they are about to pass. I find it creepy.

  21. The speed at which the water moves across the fields and swamps the ports is almost beyond belief. And apparently the tsunami spreading across the Pacific is reaching speeds of up to 600 miles per hour!

    This is terrifying. I'm paraying that many of these countries are able to implement their emerency protocal without hindrance.
  27. 70+ aftershocks 5.0 and above since the main quake.

    Apparently there have been many small quakes in the area for the previous 2 days. They were of typical size for the region. They don't become warnings of a "big one" until after the major quake happens. Will quakes ever become predictable?
